Senecio:

I will deny this if ever asked by HR but a team member of mine (direct report) and I commute home by the same route for half the distance. Not far from the office there is a left turn intersection that often has a 1km queue to get through. He has admitted to me that he often skips the queue and forces his way across closer to the lights. I know what car he drives and on the occasions where I've witnessed his queue jumping antics I may have sent him a little more urgent work the next day.

I'm not proud, but perhaps this post should be in the "things that make me smile" thread.

My biggest 'crime' is coming up the left lane in a 2 lane road like Sandringham, which then merges into a single lane, if it means I'll be the first car in the queue on that side, because I can accelerate pretty quickly, legally, and end up in the gap in front without causing anyone any inconvenience or additional wait.  It's mostly done away with now, as that lane is a bus lane :(

I think some of the "drivers are a**holes" is due to how you view it. If you default to most drivers being a**holes then, indeed, most drivers will be a**holes. If you default to assuming they're not then most drivers will just be people who didn't notice you trying to pull out of the driveway, or whatever, in the same way that you probably haven't noticed someone trying to pull out into traffic at some time in the past.

Case in point, today I was crossing the exit from a Pak'n'Save and there was a gap between two cars in front of me. I was just checking to make sure it was safe to cross when the car closed the gap. As the driver did this, she noticed me and immediately apologised - she wasn't being an a**hole, she was just focusing on the car in front and didn't notice me at the side, and even if she hadn't said anything I'd have treated it as such. OTOH if I'd defaulted to "everyone's an a**hole" then she would have been a a**hole.

If you come across three as*holes in a day, perhaps they aren't the problem...

I hate it when the first thing to greet me as a customer for the day is to solve other people's problems who have just been lazy, stupid or sloppy in their job.

The guy who was turning left into the main road and didn't stop before the pedestrian crossing when I was about to put my foot on the road is an asshole.

Best of DHL! This courier lost his job after this went viral (was not here, hence I saw it occasionally in my city as well). But you’ll get always shock tested gear. DHL - literally simply delivered!

Or look the aerial delivery by this dude!

Being caught out by a planned 2degrees outage for calls. While it would have been nice to have received a warning, I can't see anywhere for my home address to be associated with my account, and therefore no easy way for them to know I'll be affected. My partner needed to make a call. Fortunately, I was able to enable wifi calling for it to work.

Defensive driving teaches that you must treat every other vehicle's driver as a potential a**hole and be constantly thinking about how to avoid a collision. In a queue of traffic that's not moving you can relax a bit but always looking behind you. I cannot see most drivers eyes in front of me, in their rear view mirror. How can these people be aware of what's behind them? When lane changing the majority of people only start indicating after moving towards the lane, if they do. What's so hard about thinking 'I'm going to change lanes soon, start indicating'?

Our standards of driver education are pitiful and urban driving is not policed enough.

I don't see much evidence of it here but driving in Australia, if you indicate your intent to change lanes early it seems to be code for "I must close the gap to prevent them from changing lanes".

Similarly, people who put a foot on the brake first, THEN indicate their intent to turn into a side street.

I'm with you. My commute across town is about 55mins in the morning and 75mins in the evening. I try to pass the time with a podcast or new music but that gets boring pretty quickly.

I listen to audio books when I'm on long flights... you might enjoy them on your commute? https://librivox.org/ has a wide range of genres.

Snapper card on the trains in Wellington. It's annoying having to scan your card 3 times (tag on and off, and also have someone scan it on the train to make sure you tagged on) compared to the previous paper ticket system when you'd only have to show it once. Also not having enough machines at stations so you end up having to queue on the platform when you get off the train going home. I asked Metlink whether there were any plans to install more (my experiences being at Melling and Petone) and they replied along the lines of not worth spending the money for the "small window of the day it's busy."

Anyway today's frustration with it is the $10 "penalty" for not tagging off. Yesterday morning I was running a bit late for a meeting so raced off the train at Wellington and in my rush must have inadvertently missed tagging off as I got charged a $10 penalty when I tagged on to go home at the end of the day - cue the card not having enough funds left on it to pay the penalty and tag on for a new fare so then had to faff around tying to top it up before missing the train. It seems a high penalty at 4 times what the fare would have been but I appreciate it's to deter genuine fare dodgers. Have emailed Metlink and Snapper asking if they can refund the difference between the actual fare and the penalty for a one off accident - they can see from my transaction records my regular journey is between Melling or Petone and Wellington at the same times each day so it should be clear. Know it's my own fault etc so probably just have to write it off, but can be easy to forget to get your card back out again when you're in a rush so worth a try.

Losing your wallet. Just did it now. Thankfully it's pretty easy to freeze cards these days. Had four of em to do (personal BNZ, Wise, Dosh, work Westpac).

I've got a somewhat unique name, so hopefully someone sends me a message on messenger.

TWO friggen days after booking the flight, I get this email.

To add insult, as in the mixed metaphor "We've got you over a barrel, so we'll shaft you", when you click on that button, THERE IS NO CHOICE!!!! There is no option to decline the changes!!! But there is stuff I, the unpaid servant of the airline, have to do. And, of course, I can't possibly make arbitrary changes without getting screwed over again.

This BS seems to have become the standard thing for airlines. Every damn flight I've booked in the last several years, I've subsequently had the forced acceptance of schedule changes, sometimes 2 or 3 times for the same ticket. What is the point of the airline publishing a schedule if they then arbitrarily change it? W.T.F is the benefit of these changes to the airline, that they would stuff up all their passengers arrangements?
