Q: We're getting very low throughput [which after further exchanges I calculate to be dialup modem speed, and by modem I mean V.32], is there some option we can toggle to improve throughput?
A: Sure, just toggle the undocumented make-it-go-faster switch and throughput will magically increase by 10,000%! Either that or set your MTU to something bigger than 8 bytes [seriously, and it was a stop-and-wait protocol so each block had to wait for an ack].
Q: We get error message XYZ from your software.
A: That's not coming from our software, our messages use a consistent and completely different to that, format.
Q: When our client tries to connect it keeps getting a TCP reset. Also, the server never sees the incoming connection from the client. Whatever can the problem be?
A: [Left as an exercise for the reader].
Eva888: ANZ Bank. Driving past the Kilbirnie branch decided to stop and arrange some term deposits as had money sitting in a cheque account at no interest. At the counter am told, sorry we can’t do that because it’s a business account and you need a business advisor to do this.
I can see four assistants at the desks. Ok...when is the next person free that I can talk to? Sorry we don’t have anyone. Me, Ok when can I talk with someone as can go to the supermarket first.
She answers 10th of July! Today is June 29th.
I walk across to the BNZ bank where I also bank and ask them the same question. Can do it straight away they said.
Walk back to ANZ and tell them to transfer the money into BNZ.
Yes I know it can be done online but since I was in the area, easier to get them to do it plus it keeps the tellers in a job.
Yesterday (Thursday) purchased some veg in the new shiny paper bags at countdown and used the self checkout. And most annoyingly the paper bagged made the AI think I was a shop lifter and had to wait for operator to clear! Time to find some decent re-usable bags.
And another annoying thing at four square self checkout, is I keep thinking it is new world (brain is on auto) and scan the loyalty card, which results in unknown item and again you have wait for the operator person to clear!
But I do feel for all the supermarket staff over the next few days.
High efficient postie just dropped in another Otago Regional Council - the source brochure into mailbox that was still sitting in mailbox from 3 days ago! Now two.

I did that the other day at Countdown, and of course there's no "undo". When I told the operator what I'd done she joked that she was amazed the terminal didn't self-destruct :)
Another one I'ver no doubt mentioned before, but, annoyingly, too lazy to check up on - I visit websites from NZ, AU, UK, US, etc and still the NZ metservice manages to be the slowest to load and update.

We're putting a website replacement out for tender, and one of the requirements in the document was "pages must load in less than three seconds on a typical connection and computer". I took one look at this and said something like "uhhh.... the most complex page on the existing site takes about half a second to load and render on my old i3: are we really setting a target of something a sixth of that speed?!"
It got "improved" to two seconds.
Aim low, overachieve, someone gives themselves a bonus.
Or am I being cynical...

Realistic!
Probably not too cynical. The tender document is also using lies as justification, with comments like "we need a new site because the current one is on an unsupported platform". The platform is not only fully supported, but we're even up to date with the latest version.

I got a similar excuse as to why there was a move to go away from a semi niche product which is perfect for the job in order to use a more common product that "everyone" is familiar with but is nowhere near as good. Yes, the version we were using is an older version but there are later up to date versions. Basically some people couldn't be bothered learning to use the niche product so made up excuses not to use it.

Ah yes, the new, improved, prettier, more complicated, longer to load, dificult to navigate website. Reminds me of rebranding. Dump a well known, probably respected company name / brand for a new one that no one can either pronounce or remember just so you can spend a fortume on new headed notepaper.

New & Improved = Rarely Improved!
Usually means cheaper to produce, whether it be a product you use or consume! (But better margins & bonuses for someone!)
Rarely is it actually improved for the User / Consumer!
