The mysterious rort that is "On Road Costs".

Used to be about $350.

Just bought a new Subaru. $1500 ORC!

What even are "On Road Costs"?

A dealer legally has to provide the car with current WOF and Reg, so, under $200 for a "car" if they decide to charge you for the privilege of providing their legal obligations.
Even the thirstiest vehicles wont fit $1300 of fuel in them.
Change of ownership is $9.

I'd be inclined to so no thanks unles they can provide a breakdown of what the costs are and why I NEED to pay them.

I tried that. It’s as simple as “that’s what we charge if you want your car”. The $5,000 extra tax was even more painful.

I bet if you said "OK", got up and headed out the door that they'd suddenly try to negotiate!

Not for a Subaru XT. They have a waitlist!

I believe we are at the end of “the happy times” for car retailers. They have been in gravy for the last 3 years where closed borders and people looking for something to spend their disposable income on, combined with supply constraints, have meant demand has outstripped supply. That has led to the mentality of “if you want this car, you have to pay this premium”. But supply is up and soon demand may well be down (CoL crisis anyone?).
As for the ‘tax’, I mean fee, the dealers are at pains to point out it’s not their fault. But if there is a change of government and the “ute tax” is abolished, your car will instantly be worth $5000 less. Or will the dealers just increase their margin?

I go out to floss the cat and notice a DHL we-missed-you note on the doorstep (really must get the imaginary doorbell fixed some time). It tells me to go to the DHL site and select a delivery option, which is odd because I've got leave-at-front-door as my preset option. So I sign in and it tells me I have no shipments due, which would explain why they didn't leave them by the front door.

So now my nonexistent shipment will arrive Monday instead of today.

I'm somewhat afraid to ask!  A quick google search was rather .... colourful.

Ah, you took the first hit (which I wasn't aware of until now) rather than all the ones that followed:

In English, we sometimes say “I'm flossing the cat”. It's slang and it is supposed to convey that you are busy while you actually aren't. For example: I would love to watch Twilight with you but I'm flossing the cat.

For anyone else, please replace "floss the cat" in the post with "give aerobic scream therapy to my goldfish", which a quick Google confirms has no alternative NSFW meaning.

I used the phrase "starter for 10" at work the other day and got looks of confusion all around!

Given the original show finished in 1989 it’s hardly surprising.

Wikipedia says it started again in 1994 and has run every year since. I'm pretty sure that the "starter for 10" phrase is still used.

But the book is from 2003 and the film came out in 2006 and stars Benedict Cumberbatch so at least some people should be familiar with it.

Yep dropped "Claytons" into a conversation the other day. Then I realised that was a VERY long time ago - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claytons

I use Claytons all the time at work. Im careful to make sure my audience are of a similar vintage to myself but I slipped up the other day and had to explain it to someone.

The film made US$1.7 million globally. Until I just googled it I had no idea it existed and at least I was aware of University Challenge.
