neb: Ran into a great example of council mismanagement of this on the weekend, they've been removing rubbish bins from parks and public spaces which has led to the totally predictable appearance of piles of rubbish where the bins used to be. The claim is that they're only removing the lesser-used bins based on data they have, except that on the very busy Devonport waterfront where the bins are not lesser-used they've also removed most of them, leading to overflowing bins for the few that remain.

This outcome was so obvious from the moment the idea went out of their mouths.

It's unbelievable how people can be so stupid.

Who makes the rules for what traffic management is required? its not the traffic management companies, is it?

Seen some work on the side of the motorway, one ute with a warning sign, 2 of the bigger trucks maybe 5m apart, with the barriers to protect the final ute doing the work. Really didn't need the 2 barrier trucks, one would have been sufficient.

It's unbelievable how people can be so stupid.

Credit where credit's due please. Wellington City Council did it first by removing half the bins from places like the Botanic Garden, under the guise of encouraging visitors to take their rubbish home with them.

It works in Tokyo. There are almost no rubbish bins. People there are quite conformist and most wouldn't dream of just dropping rubbish.

As opposed to here where people think nothing of "hiding" their rubbish under their car in a public park, then driving off leaving the pile on the ground.

I believe NZTA writes the codes of practice, then the traffic management companies write a plan that theoretically complies with the code of practice.

Then the Road Controlling Authority (council, or NZTA for state highways) approves/rejects the plan.

Where people are watching, Japan is very tidy. Where people think they're not being watched, they often act very differently.

Years ago when going on mountain-bike expeditions up overgrown forestry trails in rural Japan, I frequently ran into literal truck-loads of junk tipped off the side of the road.

Once, at a scenic lookout, I was chatting to an older guy, both of us admiring the spectacular view. He chucked his canned coffee can off the edge, and then was genuinely puzzled that I was giving him a hard time about it. A different generation I suppose.

Ex-colonel accused of divulging US secrets on foreign dating website - BBC News

Charging documents published on Monday say that Mr Slater passed along information he learned from classified Stratcom briefings relating to Russia's invasion of Ukraine to a person he believed to be a woman in Ukraine.

He was frequently asked in message exchanges about US national defence secrets, prosecutors said on Monday.

"Dear, what is shown on the screens in the special room?? It is very interesting," said one message sent on 11 March.

"You are my secret agent. With love," the contact said on 23 March after requesting information about a certain country. Investigators have redacted which specific country the contact was asking about.

"My sweet Dave, thanks for the valuable information," and "you are my secret informant love!" the contact sent in other messages.

As I understand it, Orca eat only the shark's liver, and nothing else on the shark. Granted a shark's liver is massive compared to ours.
