Erm Rolls, Jaguar, Rover (see SD1), Morgan, Lotus, Triumph (see TR8), Aston Martin.

OK, so not British any more. OK, unreliable, rusty, but sh!tboxes, thats a bit strong...

The UK auto industry did go through a period of awful mediocrity in the 70's. Think Leyland P76, Austin Princess, Allegro etc. Even the premium brands in that era were poor.

All those marques were plagued with electrical connector issues, mechanical issues such as shoddy steering and suspension components, rust, oil leaks, water leaks. Many would arrive in the showrooms with those issues already present. Even now those names feature at the bottom of the reliability ranks along with the european marques.

All true, but a lot of the actual designs were terrific. I had an SD1 for a while and loved it. Needed plety of things fixing, but still. And the TR8 I always fancied i.e. TR7 with the Rover V8. XJ6, or better yet XJ12.

When I win the Lotto its XJ, SD1 (and Citroen CX) all electrified...

We had a bright yellow Austin Maxi as our family car when I was a young teen.
Premium? no.
Reliable? Kind of.
Sh!tbox? In hindsight, yes.
Didn't get rusty though, which is unusual for a 70's era Austin.

I've never been in a car since that had as much interior room as that thing did. It was limo-esque.

Austin Maxi - yes, back in the sdays when cars came with windows you could actually see out of (and the only lectric motor it had was for the wipers).

But if you want(ed) space Citroen CX Prestige.

Austin Maxi, now I think you need a retrospective time out for that indiscretion😀

Full disclosure I briefly had an affair with an Austin Kimberly, my first brand new car.  I can still hear my Dad saying "OMG what were you thinking, did my teachings fall on deaf ears"  He was right oh boy was he right

Interesting... When I bought a brand new Chrysler PT Cruiser, back in 2003 or so, a friend looked at it and said "Mauricio, what have you done?"

To be fair, a very comfortable ride, plenty of space.

Fun fact one side of the Rover SD1 was longer than the other side.

When ever I think of the PT Cruiser I think of the Fiat Multipla very roomy and practical but would you take it home to meet your parents 😀 😇

I'm guessing that in this case the only remaining vestige of fine British automotive heritage is in the design of the badge.

Nope. Once the Prince of Darkness gets into your vehicle line, he never leaves.

Which means the MG EVs must be purely Chinese designs, if there was any vestige of British MG left they wouldn't run at all.

You want to watch the cricket later on and don't want to know the result, and say to yourself right I better swipe the google notification away. And what do I do, I look at the damn score. Crap and crap (2nd one hint to the result).

Another fun fact. The police in the U.K. used them and they were referred to as “Jam Sandwiches” because the police livery at the time was white with a single red/orange stripe
in the horizontal centre, so it looked like two slices of white bread with a layer of jam in the middle.
