How does that happen these days?

With ease!

You make the person responsible for this sort of thing redundant!

Seen it many times.

They apply the same software quality control to their website that they do to their infotainment screen in the car which feels like a 10 year old budget android tablet running an interface from a budget DVD player.

They might gently point out that they could be fined or suspended if you are intoxicated and they sell to you and that having a conversation with you seems a pretty normal and reasonable way of checking, as opposed to say getting you to blow in a breathalyser. Maybe the particular person speaking with you wasn't that good at communicating, but overall it seems a fairly reasonable thing for a supervisor to do.

Not at all. If they are so terrified of getting pinged, maybe they just shouldn't sell alcohol. That outfit has a disturbing American southern state mentality that extends beyond just alcohol control. Fortunately there are plenty of other options so I will just vote with my feet in the future.

They are fullfilling their legislative requirements in just about the most reasonable and unintrusive way that I can think of. I get the feeling the person speaking may be taking the policy too literally, but talking to you is a pretty normal thing to do.

Not quite a ‘WT’ but not sure where else to post this..

I asked ChatGPT a genuine question - first time I’ve really used it: “Which lake has the larger surface area - Tahoe or Taupo?”

The answer, abbreviated by me here: “Tahoe is the larger. Tahoe is 490 sq km, Taupo is 616 sq km. So Taupo is the larger.”

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Maybe an Aussie can provide some thoughts.

CBS News: Australian spy chief under pressure to name "traitor" politician accused of working with spies of foreign regime
...
Australia's director-general of security Mike Burgess said a spy team from an unidentified country had cultivated and recruited a former Australian politician.

"This politician sold out their country, party and former colleagues to advance the interests of the foreign regime," the spy chief said in a speech in Canberra on Wednesday.

Australia is a member of the "Five Eyes" intelligence-sharing group that includes the United States, Britain, Canada and New Zealand -- making it a juicy target for operatives from countries such as China and Russia.

Burgess, who runs the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, said the unidentified former politician had been recruited "several years ago."

The person had even proposed bringing a prime minister's family member into the "spies' orbit," a plan that did not proceed, he said.

The former politician did, however, organize an overseas conference at which spies posing as bureaucrats targeted participants for recruitment, eventually obtaining security and defense information from an academic, Burgess said.

Yes, crazy to rely on it for anything important. However it was an easy way for me to get simple facts and, despite its stumble, worked well for what I wanted.

The answer got mangled but Tahoe is a lot deeper which results in it being over twice the volume of water in Taupo so it's both larger and smaller.

I didn’t mention volume - specifically and only asked which one has the largest surface area. The answer did not refer to volume.

CBS News: Australian spy chief under pressure to name "traitor" politician accused of working with spies of foreign regime

Good talk here about the issue: Mike Burgess on the former Australian politician recruited by foreign spies – Australian Politics podcast

Presented by Daniel Hurst. Produced by James Milsom. Executive producer Miles Martignoni

Daniel Hurst, Guardian Australia’s foreign affairs and defence correspondent, speaks to Mike Burgess, the head of Australia’s domestic intelligence agency Asio, about the allegations he made this week that an unnamed former Australian politician was recruited by spies for a foreign regime. They also discuss increased community tensions in Australia as the Israel-Gaza conflict continues and whether Asio needs more oversight.

I thought my normal insurance that costs me over 3k would be sufficient to cover us while re-roofing but no. Beware people when you get doors, windows, roofs replaced, your insurance doesn’t cover damage that may happen while it’s open to elements. You need Limited Contract Works Insurance.

So I’m thinking insurance for 14 days while reroofing will be tops $200ish, nope $608 is the quote, and they make sure there isn’t any risk to them whatsoever before they will offer it and now am told by roofer I should extend it for even longer in case.
