the cheap 1 kg Pams sausages actually had less wheat in them than some of the "better" brands.

Less wheat, but more pine.

I was off wheat for a couple of months at one point due to a misdiagnosis, and I was amazed to find that the cheap 1 kg Pams sausages actually had less wheat in them than some of the "better" brands.

Pams is a fantastic brand and so much of what we have tried has been vastly superior to the supposed 'premium' brands.

Pam's is usually a well known brand product without the branding and marketing.

Back to the "small things that really annoy you", Watties baked beans contain wheat, but it's in very, very, small print on the label and easy to miss. I believe there's an update to the food labelling standards in NZ which means they have to make allergens more visible, currently voluntary but due to become mandatory in 2024.

In February 2021, the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code was amended to introduce new requirements for the labelling of allergens in food. These plain English allergen labelling changes will help people find allergen information on food labels more quickly and easily, so they can make informed and safe food choices.

Food businesses have 3 years from 25 February 2021 to implement the new requirements. During this transition period, businesses can comply with either the existing allergen declaration requirements in the food standards code, or the new requirements.

On the plus side, Oak baked beans do not contain wheat, so that's what we buy.

I have reading glasses but i only use them for reading labels literally. NZ and AUS have the best regulations, you can trust them, but small print on a can is a pain. What I'm seeing is that the number of gluten free foods is growing a lot. They dont want to lose customers so are moving to maize flour instead of wheat. Id like to see a standard GF label on all compliant foods. Prominent

Oak, Heinz and Pams don't use wheat in their BB/spaghetti

Geektastic: They do have lobster in the North Sea so you ought to be able to get it there! Crab too.

As I said, the European lobster (Homarus gammarus) with 4,500t/a and partly aquacultured is much more expensive compared to the naturally caught American lobster or Maine lobster (Homarus americanus) with a catch quota of 100,000t/a. In Maine, some B&Bs even serve lobster for breakfast. 😊

Geektastic: Yes very hard to get decent quality sausages. I haven’t yet resorted to making my own, but I might!

No butcher or cook here would think of putting flour in the sausage (except for the cheapest industrial products). It is really very easy to make a good sausage in stock yourself, as you can freeze it very well in portions. I have an attachment adapter with different calibres for the meat grinder and the stringlings are also easy to obtain. A little practice at the beginning and that's all you really need. If you need recipes, especially for authentic game sausages, let me know. A friend of mine is a chef with a one-star restaurant. 😇

Pop over the channel. Wild lobster is caught all along the southern coast of the UK.

They have Pam’s Finest frozen croissants and pain au chocolat.

Both actually made in France and both extremely good. However, both missing from the freezer in the supermarkets around here for at least the last 6 months.

As is their frozen flaky puff pastry ( minor crisis in the Floyd household at the moment with Edmonds discontinuing theirs, recommendations for alternatives welcome) and their rolled oats (it's like eating beanbag filling when you make porridge with it).

On the other hand, plenty of other Pam's branded staples in our pantry, milk powder's milk powder, brown sugar's brown sugar (how come you taste so good?).

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Pam's Finest triple chocolate ice cream is a favourite of mine... and I haven't seen it for 2-3 years. It's still on the Pam's website though!

That must have changed a lot in the last few years. The last time I was on the Isle of Wight, there was no sign of it (or I was looking in the wrong places).

Throw the can at them. All brands have the same effectiveness using this method! (All lousy!)
