Countdown again. There is no legal basis for this. They just seem to think they need to/have a right to/have a compulsion to control their customer's behaviour and morals. See my other post about a conversation.

Paracetamol up to 10 grams is classified for general sale. Larger quantities are pharmacy only.

That's interesting and something I was unaware of.  If I'm reading correctly, that limits supermarkets and other general retailers to a 20 pack of 500mg tablets as 500mg x 20 = 10g.

[sarcasm] A major Australian pharmacy chain have been very diligent in checking on my health and wellbeing while I buy 2 boxes of 100 paracetamol tablets for around $6 roughly once a year for the last three years.[/sarcasm]

A brief google turned up that the coroner recommended in 2020 that they introduce limits following an accidental overdose in 2017:

Dunedin student's paracetamol overdose: Countdown introduces sales limit - NZ Herald

Apparently, the EU won't allow paracetamol in supermarkets at all.

Looks like Australian rules change next year.

As far as I know, there is still no legal basis for restricting paracetamol quantities in supermarkets. This is something they have taken on themselves, especially Countdown in its never-ending quest to do what is best for other people.

gzt: I was going to ask if it was Panadine the paracetamol+ codine combination.

Panadine became a prescription medicine some time ago.

Geektastic:

Why are we treated like children so often?!

Because it is a prescription drug and, if taken over a longer period of time, increases the side effects of other drugs. Because it is a painkiller, the threshold for abuse in younger adults is a bigger problem than cannabis.

This is already answered here. Max 10 grams without a prescription.

I looked at it. All I see is recommendations and retail organisation policy. Nothing about the law.

I don’t think you can buy that at all in NZ. Available over the counter in the UK for sure. I bought some from Boots last year.

I was also intrigued to find paracetamol for sale in Portugal in 1000mg tablets rather than 500mg.

In case anyone thinks I’m a drug-addled basket case, I broke my back last year and take paracetamol and prescribed codeine for the pain.

There's no law that requires them to sell to you in whatever quantity you want. Providing they are not discriminating against a protected attribute they can set whatever limits they like.

The one and only time I have had to call the poisons hotline was when my then-girlfriend's younger sister (I think age 17 or so) had sent her a text message saying she had taken 30 panadol tablets. This was 20 years ago but I still remember word for word the conversation I had with the operator.

She was in the hospital for a long time but survived.

The basic law was linked, but here's some more detail that I looked up for you:

Medicines Act 1981 sec 18

Except as provided in sections 25, 27, and 30 to 33, or as may be permitted by regulations made under this Act, no person shall, in the course of any business carried on by that person, sell by retail, or supply in circumstances corresponding to retail sale, or distribute by way of gift or loan or sample or in any other way,—

(a)any prescription medicine unless—

(i) the medicine is sold, supplied, or distributed by a pharmacist in a pharmacy or hospital;

Medicines Regulations 1981 Schedule 1

Part 1 Prescription medicines
1572 Paracetamol; except when specified elsewhere in this schedule

Medicines Act 1981 sec 99

Director-General to publish lists of general sale medicines

(1) The Director-General shall from time to time, in such manner as he thinks fit, publish a list or lists of general sale medicines.

(2) In this section general sale medicines means medicines that may be lawfully sold in New Zealand, other than prescription medicines, restricted medicines, and pharmacy-only medicines.

Medicine Classification Database

Search for Paracetamol.

Paracetamol in tablets or capsules containing 500 milligrams or less and in packs containing not more than 10 grams; General Sale

So, you can't sell a prescription medecine unless you are pharmacist. Paracetamol is classified as a prescription medicine. The Director General made a list of general sale medications that can be sold anyway, and quantities of paracetamol up to 10 grams is on the list. No retail organisation policy in sight!

EDIT: Tried to fix formatting

OK you are right. Apparently this is a very recent change. It was expected but I couldn't see that it had been implemented. Thanks for your trouble in clarifying this.
