Work.

We've had a restructure. Morale is low. New tools are being employed (to make work "better"). It now feels like we are not only being asked to do a lot more with a lot less, but we're also now doing more of the unfulfilling things that don't take advantage of our skillsets.
For the first time in nearly two years at this job, I am really not enjoying it. Like REALLY not enjoying it.

At times I feel like a well-paid administrator. I didn't sign up for that. I don't want to come off as conceited but I am too old, senior and skilled to be doing a lot of the stuff I am expected to now be doing. I know it's a financial crisis, but we need more inexpensive people doing more, not less people doing more.

Work.

As soon as your boss uses the words "Work smarter, not harder" it's time to be smarter and move on to a rational environment.

Software that doesn't use semantic versioning. I upgraded a chat app from 1.11.47 to 1.11.48 and now it doesn't run, complaining that my OS is too old. This sort of thing is a breaking change and shouldn't be slipped into a bugfix release. To make matters worse, the change log doesn't bother to mention it either.

Funny thing, unrelated to software...

A new company moved into our building a couple of months ago. The directory listing on the ground floor had their name spelt with a typo. After a few weeks it was fixed.

A couple of weeks ago our reception moved floors.

The directory listing was updated to reflect this. And the typo in the new company name returned, same as before.

My guess is the directory listing comes from a file. Someone updated the file to fix the typo but did not check in the change. Someone else used an older file to change our floor, bringing back the typo.

Same with people who don't understand that document management systems are perfectly capable of versioning and it's pretty simple to revert or refer to an earlier version of a doc....but no, let's save it as a new record and f*** up everyone else who is using the exisiting link, they can just end up recalling the old document.

And don't forget using code comments as version control!

Regarding the software I was complaining about, I logged a bug report and they confirmed that it was changed deliberately. They've added it to the change log now.

AliExpress is the same. I had a refund declined because I gave them the seller's photo of a bunch of LEDs that weren't illuminated. I apparently needed to include a photo of my actual LEDs actually not working.

That seems entirely reasonable.

I will not use AE again out of principle after one of their sellers sent me something different to what was advertised (tracker was advertised as Airtag compatible but was not). I pointed out the error and both the seller and AE refused to remedy.

Buying something, which automatically signs you up for marketing, who advertise and extoll the benefits of the exact item you purchased.

My partner watches a show called "Worst House on the Street". It's about people buying a run down house and fixing it up to live in.

At the end of the show they reveal how much value has been added by the work, e.g. they spend $30,000 on reno and it increases the value by $70,000. But what annoys me no end is that the hosts proclaim this as a $40,000 profit for the home owner.

This isn't a bloody profit unless they sell the house, which they aren't doing!

When the AliExpress item that you don't need urgently turns up within a week and the one you want to get your hands on ASAP takes three months.

"My house earns more than I do each week" - is another one that annoys me.

What's worse is the colleague who checked in an updated configuration file into our GIT repo, and at the same time also checked in configfile.old.yyyymmdd - total lack of understanding of source control and versioning!

Related: Reporting a bug in a piece of software, which was never acknowledged let alone fixed... then a couple of months later they sent me a promotional email about their latest app. The only reason they had my email address was because of the bug report.

Oof. That would be much worse than my thing.

Being in charge of a sports team (tennis in my case), when you need to scrape for fill ins every week. Start of this season has been particularly bad for availability, admittedly some of it self inflicted by me being away on 2 different weekends. The frustration is when you're dealing with young guys who are likely rarely ever without their phone in their hand, but they can't reply to a text asking if they can play in the weekend. As much as I try to get the team confirmed early in the week, I still often end up scrambling to find a final player on Friday.
