I had forgotten this thread even existed - I went to a lot of gigs last year.

I am keen to add to my list this year, but have nothing booked - too many gigs, too many $$ and not enough in the old bank account.

Gigs I would like to go to this year include:

Metallica
Slipknot
Everclear
Bryan Adams

I am sure there'll be more that will land with relatively short notice as well.

When you consider that the average ticket for a gig on this list is approx $120-$160, that's a lot of money tied up in entertainment if I were to decide to attend.

Last year we went to Teddy Swims and Tim Minchin.

Teddy was very good, loved his passion and appreciation of the audience. Tim was just a mind bend for me. So talented, incredible piano playing but very hard to keep up with his talking.

This year I have booked in Alison Moyet who has just been moved to the Civic for Auckland so more seats now available. Was worried about the reallocation of seating but looks like I have second row so no complaints yet. I was annoyed I missed her last time so pleased she is returning. James Blunt is also booked in, really enjoyed his last album and his wit on social media so should be fun. Yes its all about his first album but includes other songs as well.

Wish I could get to a New Order or The Cure shows. Have a big trip planned this year so priorities mean we are not going to make it to Aus for NO. The Cure video of their live performance to release their new album was great to see.

Bryan Adams in Christchurch last week.

Second time I’ve seen him and it was even more excellent than the first time. He’s not a top favourite artist of mine, although I quite like some of his work. However he and his band are consummate showmen and entertainers with a stage show of unusually high production values.

He’s one of those increasingly rare artists who is better live than on a recording.

The guys are all 60+ but they really do look like they’re enjoying every minute of what they do.

I highly recommend seeing him.

I saw Bryan Adams at his Auckland show and totally agree with the above. My aging body struggles with late nights these days but it was worth it.

My partner and I went to Shihad at Black Barn (Havelock North) at the end of January. She is a massive Shihad fan who has seen them perform live many times, and I - though I've enjoyed their music over the years, especially around the General Electric era - was seeing them live for the first time. It was epic! The venue was an outdoor terraced amphitheater, and was really well organised. No such thing as a "bad seat", food and drink options were good and not exorbitantly priced. Toilets were plentiful so no painful queues. And the band were in great form. We managed to get down into the "mosh pit" just a couple of rows from the front and had a blast. Just a shame I left it to the end to see them live.

Forgot to update after the last couple of gigs I attended.

Slipknot, supported by Northlane: Spark Arena (11.03.2025)
I'll preface this with the fact that I am a big Metal fan and really enjoy Slipknot.
This was a gig I didn't think I was going to, but when we asked my son what he wanted for his 20th birthday, he asked if we could stretch to tickets for this gig. So I went with him.
Starting off, Northlane were fantastic. I hadn't heard much from them, so was really pleasantly surprised by how good these guys were.
LOUD. They were very loud.

Then came Slipknot.
There were only 8 of them instead of the usual 9, as one of the percussionists was called away to a family emergency.

They make a lot of noise. And I mean a LOT of noise.
This was a super entertaining and really energetic gig. It was loud. It was heavy. It was awesome.
We overlooked the pit and that looked brutal. Really brutal.

I've been to a lot of gigs. This was far and away the loudest, heaviest gig I have ever been to. I've seen some super heavy bands. I've been to loud gigs. This was turned up to eleven. And a half.

A few days later, back at Spark Arena, but this time to see Shihad in their final ever Auckland gig before they retire. They were supported by Dickmove and The D4. Both of whom were pretty good for what they were, although a little punky for my tastes.
Those guys are entertainers! They are every bit as good as you'd expect them to be after 37 years together.
Jon Toogood had the crowd eating from the palm of his hand.
Again - they were heaviwer than expected. But in a good way.
They did a rather unique thing, in that they performed a retrospective, covering the whole of their career together as a band.
Starting with their most recent album, the proceeded to plat at least two songs from every album, working their way backwards to where it all began, as a more metal-infused band.
Then as an encore, they threw out their absolute classic bangers. They finished with a hiss and a roar. At one point, they asked everyone to turn on their mobile phone lights, then had the house lights extinguished while they got the crowd to wave their arms back and forth to the song. A magic moment, which as Jon stated, was an "arena rock moment, money can't buy".

My 56 year old ears are probably permanently damaged after having gone to two very loud indoor rock gigs in one week, but I'll take permanent hearing loss for those golden moments.

Glorious.

I'm a bit jealous, both those would have been fantastic.

The loudest gig I've ever been to, by a significant margin, was Motorhead in New Plymouth. I couldn't hear anything except ringing in my ears for 36 hours following that. I've been to a lot of metal, rock and punk concerts and nothing has ever come close to that.

Synthony – Auckland Domain

My first Festival. Always wanted to go to a festival so took this opportunity as had heard good things about the one held last year. Headed in about 4pm on bus and train which was easy, met up with extended family on the GA embankment and settled in. It was a good event, very well put on, great communication sent out before and vibe was good. Started to notice sound quality was not great. Thought maybe the wind was impacting things but some acts where much better than others. I enjoyed Darude, he should have been on after Cyril as he got the crowd going well. The Auckland Philharmonia was good and the singers they had were very good but again the sound was not so good, bass drops seemed to be missing and clarity was poor. I know it is a very large open space to try and cover yet I expected better. Waited for the final act Basement Jaxx, this was odd as it felt like the event had ended so lots of people left. Had a great time dancing with my daughter to end the night. Really enjoyed that part and then headed home on the event buses with about a 5min wait time, overall a 6/10. The inconsiderate people at the event and on public transport reduced the overall score, would attend again.
