allan: The American pronunciation of aluminium

Not for them it isn't they don't have an i in the word

Yes, I should have said the American spelling/pronunciation of it. Ruins a perfectly good word in my opinion.

"However, the name 'aluminium' was adopted to conform with the -ium names of most other elements. In 1925, the American Chemical Society decided to go back to the original aluminum, so the United States uses a different name from most other countries."

Not surprising LOL

You mean the correct one? Like every other -ium element?

Personally, I think they're bollox as they simply introduce confusion - no-one seems to know who has right-of-way, and either party can get quite peeved when the other doesn't give way! I don't think roads are the place to test out such ambiguity.

Speaking of crossings that are bollox...

I shake my head every time I have to negotiate this roundabout. The poor placement of pedestrian crossings at each roundabout exit (bar one) are an accident waiting to happen.

You could try this one in Hemel Hempstead, locally known as The Magic Roundabout! I had to drive around a number of times it when I was having lessons before taking my test. Also, on my test! It's quite confusing. At least it does not have pedestrians crossing where the cars are supposed to be at the same time though.

I'm going to add (having just driven home in the dark) the use of white Dulux for road markings instead of proper reflective road paint.

It's downright dangerous on rural roads where the marks are often faded to almost invisible and I can only assume it is done just to enable the use of cheap paint.

This article is worth a read.

On a more serious note,  Drivers who stay in the main lane until the last minute when turning right even when there is a clearly marked
turning bay ( the one with diagonal white stripes )  holding up everyone behind them.

All while slowing waaaaay down more than needed since they have to slow from 200 meters away because otherwise they will explode or something.
