It might just be me - but I don't see the information gathered as that particularly invasive... I can't remember if they collected Salary info (was it only a week ago!) but that would be about the most sensitive thing they could ask.

Home and work address, salary, DOB, full name.

In the right hands, no issue. In the wrong hands, very usable for identity fraud and all sorts of mischief.

So ... do we trust google?

That's an interesting question ... Maybe I am cynical but I'm picking that Google has all that information on most people at their disposal anyway...

On a lighter note, we had a laugh last Fri when a friend, living on her own thus ltd ability to get someone else's input, told us she couldn't get the site to accept her code. Turned out the last three letters on hers was "AGE". Yes, you may have guessed what the problem was!!

But, she rang the help number and she didn't get it sorted which was a surprise.

Anyway, we laughed quite a lot much to her annoyance.

It makes me wonder how Stats NZ estimate NZ's total population, given that a small percentage of people either won't or don't fill in their census info each time.

We just got our census forms today.

Hand delivered to our (very rural) house because we're in one of those areas "where communities are very isolated or have limited internet coverage"

I'd guess a good third of households out here wouldn't normally complete a census.
We'll see if the Aupouri Peninsula's population suddenly rises after this new approach.

Still no code at ours (Welly CBD).  Perhaps I'll send them a letter.

Last Friday there were 3 pieces of mail in our mailbox.. One for us, one for the neighbour (totally different letterbox) and one for a random house a few streets away which was their census letter. On Saturday morning I figured I'd drop it off in their mailbox on my way out but got there to find a 19A and a 19B (which have both existed I'd say for probably 30 years) but the letter was addressed just to 19.

I wonder how and why they have such bad address data?

Our address got 2 census letters in Feb and I used one of them and corresponding code to submit data for the whole household on Mar 6. Since then have received another reminder letter, and then today an A4-sized pack complete with forms and freepost return envelope. Did I do something wrong on Mar 6 or are the govt statisticians wasting money or...?

I just saw a Census worker five minutes ago, while walking my dog in our suburban Chch cul-de-sac. He was stopped outside a house writing something on a clipboard, then walked on. Perhaps they're door-knocking at dwellings that had no response?

I saw one on Friday. Parker her car and then walked up to a house. There were cars in the driveway, windows open, a dog barking, but she seemed to not be able to get anyone to answer the door. Tried calling out and everything but eventually gave up and drove off.

Got a card from field officer visit the address, asking to complete the form when no one at home. Already submit ages ago, end up just give them a call tell them not to send any code or field officer to the address. Feel like they just wasting their time & money if their census database have no clue if the address already submit.

I threw out around 4 letters so just waiting for the field people to come round to our home and do it in person like the good old days.

Why?

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

As much as I often dislike change and a lot of new technology (that supposedly makes our lives better), I found the online census a breeze and was happy to do it that way.

Cause I think they should come round and do it like they are supposed to that's what they get paid for.

Also just lazy if they want to come over and do it with us then fine if not then no harm done in not taking part.
