I don't think there is either. Otherwise I certainly wouldn't have posted it. I am only saying the protection isn't all that good and those who know how can get around it. That applies to a lot of sites.

I thought you were more specific, by informing people that the Herald paywall technology is the same as used by the washington post. So the washington post bypass will work on the Herald.

If you hadn't mentioned the washington post technology, then , I'd agree with you.

I don't think there is anything that tells people how to do it?

Apart from telling you that the washington post paywall hack works on the herald. That pretty much gives you the instructions to do it.

I didn't actually say how to do either, and in fact they are not the same. Since you repeated what I said, I guess we will both be banned. Also, The Herald itself has been boasting about using the WP technology, so that wasn't exactly a revelation either.

Out of curiosity I looked it up and everything I could find didn't work :)

They could have done it a lot better.  Use the right side menu for all the premium content and the main big picture areas for real news.  Just looking at it now 5 out of 7 on the right are now premium and 2 of the top 3 big pictures are premium.

The way it looks at the moment makes it look like you have to pay for breaking news.

I do wonder if libraries will have online access, or will stick to paper ones.

Umm, I'm guessing that most city and provincial libraries in NZ already provide their ratepayers with free access to digital copies of the main newspapers in this country s well as a huge range of national and international magazines.

Simply check your library's website for information for a service called PressReader.

Eg, Wellington: http://wcl.govt.nz/mygateway/newspapers.html

I read the digital versions of the Herald, Dom Post etc totally free via this app - and they're already downloaded onto my iPad before I'm up in the morning.

By far the best way to read the better content without having to wade through the clickbait.

Note: there's also another service called RB Digital that provides a range of magazines, though there's a decent crossover of those on PressReader (and the app sucks).

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I am wondering if the physical copies have some pages glued together and they are sold in 2 types now, one with special glue remover and a cheaper one with no glue remover.

The determined will be hovering over a pot of hot water trying to steam it open :)

My local paper is the Whanganui Chronicle, an NZME stable regional publication. I did think of subscribing when I moved back to Whanganui, but decided that it's just too thin to justify the $10.60/week subscription

On the front page this afternoon, the "premium" articles are:

  • "Hundreds to protest 1080 in Whanganui";
  • "Comment: Joys of shovelling steaming sheep compost";
  • "Tawhero School welcomes new principal"; and
  • "Man who assaulted partner and spat in her face sentenced"

This is Premium content?

Couple of custom ublock features added. And premium content no more (at all, but hey not missing much) appart from the headliner one.

Signs your sudden change has raised some concerns that need addressing. Or is that just a sales pitch.

I noticed that their ipad app doesn't look like it has any premium content at all.

I wonder if NZH will be a candidate for the most signficant drop in traffic for a NZ website in 2019?

Pretty much everything is marked Premium, even the stuff that I wouldn't consider "premium" at all :)

I thought the highest drop in traffic for their site would have been after that recent God-awful "makeover" that no-one I spoke to liked or commented positively on.

The print version (today's anyway) is also still available on Pressreader, free for many library subscribers.

(I know this is apples vs oranges somewhat, but it may give 'legal' free access to some of the paywalled articles, although not as soon as they are published obviously.)

It will probably

drive more traffic to Stuff

drive less traffic to Herald

Earn more income for Herald

We seem to have an obsession with everything needing to be free these days. Stuff is free, others are free as well, enjoy.
