The handle of my portafilter has become detached (too much banging on the knock-box; I realised too late adding a bit of water on the puck after pulling a shot solved this problem!) - can anyone recommend good ways to reattach the handle?

I no longer have the thin plastic sleeve that sat between stem and handle, so fit is a bit loose. I'm assuming this may be able to be replaced by using a suitable adhesive to also fill the void, but looking for recommendations. I previously had it attached using Araldite (using duct tape in replace of the sleeve) but that gave up the ghost a few weeks back.

Thanks for any ideas.

Just received a De'Longhi Fully Automatic Coffee Machine, model number ECAM23460B. After trailing different beans I can now say with the Jed extreme brand beans that I have made a barista quality coffee. Got the machine through The Market on special then an extra 10% off. Cost $675. I was about to but the more expensive version with touch screen but couldn't pass up this one.

Having bought a BES870 during the year, dialing it in and making my own dosing cup and WDT we're enjoying some great coffee at home.

Sadly my wife refuses to use the cup so spills a significant amount of the grinds, she just hits the portafilter on the counter and goes straight for the tamper.

I can buy a funnel on breville.co.nz but their shipping is glacial.

Is there anywhere in NZ (Wellington if I need to go into a store) where I can buy a suitable dosing funnel or dosing ring ?

It absolutely has to be one which pushes into the grinder though. If she has to hold the portafilter underneath she wont bother !

Grinder upgrade time...

Ok, I'm now at the point of thinking of upgrading our grinder from an SGP so am looking at the best options.

Based on what I've read here, the Eureka Mignon Specialita is a good choice.

My dilemma is that I currently single dose (as I also regularly make decaf) - is this going to work ok with the Specialita? I could buy a Eureka Mignon Zero, but I'd like the ability to switch back to using a timer later. An alternative I thought of was getting a smaller hopper for the Specialita, if that would help; or I could do what I do with the SJP, and just use the larger hopper (and try to remember to clean it out regularly!)

(Another option is to retain the SGP for decaf, but one of the reasons I'm looking to upgrade is that - like most cheaper burr grinders - it's not the greatest at fine grinding, and decaf needs a finer setting. Also bench space.)

I've also noted people saying the Specialita isn't particularly easy to change grind settings - is it difficult to the point that changing it twice a day would be a hassle?

Any other options I should consider? The budget would be up to and potentially a bit more than the cost of importing the Specialita (currently about $615).

Many thanks.

MikeB4:

My son has a Fellow Ode grinder and swears by it.

https://www.thecoffeecollective.co.nz/collections/coffee-grinders/products/fellow-ode-brew-coffee-grinder

Thanks - looks like an interesting product - kinda like its chunky aesthetic! - but apparently it's not suitable for espresso machines:

"Ode is built to dominate brewed coffee. Unfortunately, that means that Ode is not suitable for espresso. Ode’s 64mm flat burrs and motor are geared towards drip and immersion coffee brewing."

Makes the Dynamic Duo a great deal at $1350 - I paid about $1650 for a floor shop model from JB HiFi a year or two back! If you don't want/need the grinder, sell that and it's even cheaper...

After a bit more research it looks like there's a good range of after-market single-dose hoppers for many grinders including this one, and some come with bellows (never knew this was a thing!) as per this YT video.

Not that cheap off Etsy - eg, the one in that video is about $90 including shipping. AE does sell them too - eg, this one is $57 - and the body's made of aluminium (vs 3D printed plastic for the Etsy model) so potentially longer-lasting (though not as nice looking). [Edit: going by the positive feedback, this may be a better option.]

Any thoughts or experience with this kind of mod?

The Niche Zero is pretty much made for your use case. It’s stepped, so going backwards and forwards is straightforward and it’s specially designed for single dose. It’s not cheap and it’s conical burrs, if you care about flat vs conical burrs.

I really like my Eureka Specialitia but it’s not a single dosing machine. It’s also very easy to dial in but the stepless range is almost infinite as you can turn the adjustment dial multiple times. If you are going backwards and forwards on beans it’d drive me nuts.

I’m also not a fan of the Frankenstein bellows arrangements. I think they look odd. The Specialitia is really for a lazy person like me who just wants to leave beans in the hopper and get repeatable results.

I love my Eureka Specialita but it would be a frustrating exercise if I had to adjust grind settings back forth. Its really not designed for that use case, much better with a stepped grinder where you can easily return to the previous setting.

That’s a lot of performance for the money. There’s other reasons to go for more expensive machines but I don’t think the double boiler makes worse espresso than my Lelit Bianca at $3k.

The Eureka Mignon Specialita has transformed the coffee i get out of my Breville BES840. Can't believe how much a semi decent domestic grinder unlocked the potential of what that little machine can do.

I got mine from https://www.espressocoffeeshop.com/ for €337.09 and that included DHL delivery from Italy to Christchurch.

oh then i swapped out the stock breville shower screen ($55) and the stock breville basket ($52) for after market IMS products.  Picked up a dosing cup ($12) and a dosing ring ($9) from Aliexpress.
