msukiwi:

Having an accident there my polar fleece sleeve caught on the kitchen door handle, resulting in my legs whipping out from under me

before being slammed down on the vinyl floor.

Due to the high dose blood thinners I was (Now changed) on, caused major bleeding complications which I am finally home from 12 days in Hospital.

A VERY painful experience. At least it resulted in my 10yr+ medication being reviewed and updated.

Also interesting (& very sad to see) how many times security were required to restrain violent patients on the ward. (Including staff being physically struck etc!)

Glad to be home and slowly making a recovery.

That sounds awful, I am sorry you had to go through that. Sounds like you are slowly on the mend. I am not sure if you are in Auckland, but feel free to PM me if you need something brought to you or if I could help in some small way.

What an incredible woman she is. The compassion and empathy to understand his suffering is quite extraordinary.

Sad to hear he struggled like that

A little late but anyways...  Anzac Service this year, it really brought back the feelings how we should be so grateful and thankful to all the Anzac troops that have served in the last 100+ years.  We live in a pretty safe country and I'm extremely grateful I dont live in Israel or Ukraine or any of the other countries around the world that have ongoing wars where any time any where your life or your loved ones could be taken from you in an instant.

In the end Violence and war achieves nothing!

The seemingly unsurprising but still awful end to the Tom Philips and family situation today.

What a complex situation this is and there will be generations of hurt associated with the whole situation.

Such a tragedy for everyone involved.

I hope we can find suitable appropriate guidance for these kids and restore them to society.

With respect to the kids, the main concern that has come out of this for me is how many people are prepared to align themselves with or give the benefit of the doubt to someone who has done what has done over the last four years.

100%.
I didn't realise how much that would get under my skin.
He effectively kidnapped his kids, isolated them from the world while indoctrinating them in whatever version of the truth he believed. He robbed banks, engaged in numerous crimes and still people supported him.
Then he shot and very nearly killed a police officer.
He's no hero. He's not even an anti-hero. He's a criminal and deserves no support.

I do really feel for his family and his kids though - they'll never be the same.

As someone raised in rural South Waikato for a number of years, this doesn't surprise me at all. The further from the main centers you get, seemingly (true of my experience in the far north and some regions in rural south island as well), trust in authorities is low.

It wouldn't have taken much for Philips to convince people to help him, if he made a big deal about staying with his kids, how the Government had mishandled his rights to have access to his kids, and the press didn't have the full story (which they absolutely 100% don't).

What comes next for those kids is going to depend on how hard Philips indoctrinated them into mistrust of the authorities, how willing they were throughout the whole thing, and how stable their next couple of years is. No matter what, the life that the younger kids particularly have come to know with Philips, will change dramatically, and I imagine, change will be difficult to adjust to. If not handled correctly, the risk is these kids just become the living incarnation of Philips and go on to lead lives outside the law, due to not wanting to be constrained. I think a balance will need to be struck and allowances made when reintegrating them to society.  Putting them back into suburban lives and making them sit 8 hours a day in a classroom isn't likely to end well. I could be wrong, I hope I am, but I also hope the children are assessed for where they are at, not where society expects them to be. I wonder if the possibility exists for some form of hybrid education for them if it's deemed possible.

I definitely think he was a criminal and he did the wrong thing. I'd strongly agree he isn't a hero.

Having said that, after watching a number of series related to parents being forced from their parents (for good or not good reasons), and having had kids myself now, I can absolutely understand the desperation he would have felt at the thought of not being able to see his kids.

Bad choices lead to more bad choices, which limits your available choices, and stress causes people to act in ways that they might not otherwise do.

I think the situation is complex and we have very little of the story. I would love to hear an unedited account of what life was like for these kids.

I think the harm to his kids will be significant, but I wouldn't be so quick as to suggest they would have spent the last 4 years neglected or mistreated and or miserable.

I think there is a lot more to the Marakopa saga that is not public and never should be. I don't think it needs to be in the public domain like it is now. The social media frenzy is disgusting.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Certainly affected me very deeply all of yesterday. I’m guessing he stole to survive. Lots of unpleasant rumours flying that would colour any sympathy for him if true.

Can’t begin to understand how a parent can put their kids through such an ordeal. Little ones out in the bush in the freezing cold makes me shudder. Most people make a sacrifice to avoid hurting their kids, they pretend to be ok with decisions made so as to protect their children and not allow them to unduly suffer. Four years!

I don’t know how anyone can rehabilitate these children and I doubt the family has that ability. They need quiet and understanding. Maybe some home schooling to start with and a designated psychologist monitoring lessons and above all some fun. Would hate to see them in a school with their peers who can be very cruel depending on whose side their parents were on. Terribly sad situation.

I wholeheartedly agree with Mike. There are parts of this story that should absolutely never see the light of day. He has gone. The focus should be on the children and supporting them to live healthy lives, not digging into the last four years for some perverse pleasure of those not involved.

I can only hope that the court-ordered injunction issued for 48 hours yesterday becomes permanent. Nothing good will come if the suppression order is lifted, mark my words.

I don't know what the truth of this situation is. I have no inside knowledge. But it is at least possible that the kids were not suffering at all but were having the time of their lives, one big adventure holiday. Apart from the death of their dad, they might not like being removed from that at all. I know I wouldn't.

I am in agreement about this. There is next to no chance you could keep 3 young kids miserable cold and in constant danger for 4 years. He is an accomplished bushman and whilst life probably wouldn't appeal to everyone, I'd suggest things have been far better than people may be thinking.
