https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-delta-outbreak-why-charges-havent-been-filed-against-wanaka-holidaymakers-yet/N2C45AZFH637GIKT7WJH2DKJYU/

So now the country is paying even more in the way of crown legal costs, because of these two. When will this end.

Yes I know dog with a bone, but this is getting ridiculous

So you don't want them charged due to the cost?

What point is it that you think actually needs making? There's almost literally no point in the existence of of a discussion forum if the default repsonse is "if you don't like it, tell someone else".

The point is, getting outraged that someone can use their knowledge and money to get a different result than someone without those things, isn't something worthy shouting at the people doing it, rather the people who allow it.

That's the entire source of people's outrage though right?

We live in a country where if you're white and wealthy you basically get off anything because mummy can hire you a QC.

While the outrage may be somewhat directed directly at these bottom-feeding, oligarch wannabees, it's mostly towards a system that allows it to happen.

I would tend to agree with the point that, if you don't like the law, write to your MP. That's what they are there for. And I can tell you first hand that noise made at an MPs office certainly makes it way through to minsters when media risk is involved.

"He was driving in Bombay in December when he was stopped by police and allegedly found driving with alcohol in his blood system. The reading was allegedly over the 50 milligrams limit, but not exceeding 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood, which can result in disqualification or prison.

Willis faces a fine and demerit points and is due back in court in October."

Why is a Court involved? That would normally be a $200 infringement notice.

Course he is. He's used to getting everything his way.

No mea culpa here !

I have stated that I hope he and his girlfriend go to jail over the Wanaka stunt. I believe they deserve it. I do not believe they should be persecuted for every other real or imagined unrelated transgression they may or may not have committed. They are now being raked over the coals for completely separate issues because of Wanaka. That is not justice. It is mob mentality. Like everyone else in this country, he is entitled to a legal defence and he is entitled to request a trial if that is his wish. If he is found guilty, he should pay the price. If he is not, that should be the end of the matter. Wanaka has nothing to do with it.

Well the floodgates are ajar, flouters are getting caught aplenty now, i wonder if they are just getting caught now, or if they are only going now.

Seems every day there are reports of another.

So if he have been a muppet on several occasions and places, he should only be prosecuted for one of those so that he is not "raked over the coal".

Pretty sure that is not how the law works, but I am not a lawyer.

That is not what I said and it is certainly not what I meant. If he has transgressed on different occasions and in different places, he should be judged on the merits of each of those transgressions, not for something else he did somewhere else. In other words, if he drank and drove, the only issue to be decided is if he was over the legal limit, not that he broke quarantine to go on holiday. Those are, and should be, strictly separate issues. What I am seeing from some replies in this thread is a rush to judgement based on perceptions of his character, rather than what he actually did. That is wrong.

If correct, the actions to fight any and all charges seems to show a pattern of a rich person who doesn't think the rules should apply to them.

At the risk of taking this thread off topic, it now apparent that there are many folks who have engaged in a similar level of deliberation… with varying degrees of success.

Obviously increasing the enforcement footprint is one way to deal with this but keen to sound out ideas on how we can make lockdown more tolerable for Aucklanders. I must say that going out for a long drive does increasingly have some appeal (I’m not going to be the next border runner though).
