My DS115J is still as trustworthy and reliable as ever but as you can tell by the model number it's getting rather long in the tooth.

It gets backed up to a cruddy Seagate GoFlex Home, even longer in the tooth and proving less reliable these days.

A shiny new 920 would restore the resilience that I'm longing for.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

yggdrasil:

"Replying as required"

Actually, been planning to get one of these for a while

OK. I see the rules have been edited to require a serious answer :). Here's mine:

I'm concerned about the range of 'new' products, services, and hardware being announced in these videos. Concerned because I want a NAS: I want a reliable, secure device that can act as a safe space for my files. I've worked with Synology products before, and they worked. That's what I need - something that works and is reliable. I always knew you could get extra functionality through DSM's package manager, but frankly we had dedicated hardware and service providers for the other things we needed, and we needed the NAS to do one thing: and it did it well enough that I could forget about it and not let it be a headache.

Synology appears to be expanding it's operations into network management, data management, cloud provider, password manager, Identity manger (!?) and all-things-to-everyone-all-the-time.

There's an unfortunate pattern with tech companies:

1. Company starts off doing a thing, does it well, and develops a reputation for being great at that thing;

2. Company starts to 'leverage' good reputation to try to take over their customer's operations by trying to do/be everything at once;

3. Lack of focus and dilution of engineering resources means company, instead of doing one thing well, starts doing 200 things poorly - including the one thing that built their reputation.

I don't want to name any specific companies that come to mind, but I can think of several companies that made me a happy customer at first, and which I then had to drop. The number of them could fill a box, I tell you.

So I wish them well with the multiple products across multiple lines that they're rolling out, but I hope they don't fall off in the quality of their core offering. I just want a NAS.

Hi,

my impressions, is it will be very good for storing my data, I will be using it definitely to store all my photography files and my business data. i will not be using online services associated with the SAN except cloud storage.

Thanks

I am interested in many NAS functions but particularly the CCTV feature which I think suit home and SMB, and also are a way to introduce NAS to business.

Just realised my Netgear readyNAS DUO is 12 years old! (It has been turned off for a few years - but perhaps time to look at another solution - and Synology seems to have  a good rep..)

I have two Synology NAS's - a DS412+ and a DS916+

The 916+ is at our main home and the 412+ at our bach.

The file structures are identical on both machines.  They are kept in sync (in almost real time) using Synology Drive Sharesync.  The key advantage of this is that when I go to the bach, I have access to the same files as I have at home - including same shortcut names.

For part of the backup solution, I have :

- the home server backing up to the Bach server at 12-00am each day using hyperbackup,

- the bach server backing up to the Home server at 3-00am and

- both servers backing up to external drives at 6-00am each day eg the home server backing up to an external drive located at home and similarly for the bach server.

As an extra protection, I backup the home server (important files only) to CrashPlan in real time (this is a bit messy, because I have to first sync these files to a pc which in turn backs them up to CrashPlan - is there a better way than this ???).

The new products follow Synology's pathway of continuing improvement.  I'm particularly interested in the new router - currently I have two identically configured edgerouters at the home and bach.  However, I suspect that cost considerations will preclude 'upgrading' to the new RT6600ax.

Badge me up :D

I have been thinking of a NAS for a long time, and after just becoming a dad and taking so many pictures i need some reliable backup and a NAS could make me sleep better at night.

Good luck to you all, and happy holidays :)

I've been considering buying a NAS since I digitized my Blu-ray collection. The DS 920+ has always been at the top of my shopping list, but I haven't been able to justify the cost. I have recently turned my attention to the DS220+, which will be more than capable of streaming my Movie collection, as long as I buy a good sized Iron Wolf HDD.

Watching over two hours of promotional Synology videos is a bridge too far for me, but I will gladly receive a badge, Cheers 😁

EDIT: I'm gonna go for it. Watching video's now 😎

Keen to get hold of a new 920+ to replace my aging 412+.  Then I can run DSM7 on both machines

My family have a constant issue with their phone storage running out so I am looking to upgrade to NAS to extend storage and an easy solution to keep whole family's pictures and videos at one place. Cloud storage is not what I want but i want something private with similar luxury of cloud.

Looking at options from Synology.

I'm looking at replacing my two NAS units as they're both quite old now and only dual drives.
A new Synology has been top of my list but the new features make it a done deal.
If I don't win the NAS I'll be getting one anyway!

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Real awesome of synology to do the promo. Like many others it is difficult to sit down through the whole video.

A new NAS would be awesome, as I wished I got more than a dual slot thinking I didn't want raid1..

Would be interesting to see how the new 6600ax perform.
