I get the whole narrative around supporting and rehabilitating criminals, but that takes time. In the meantime we need to do whatever it takes to keep the public safe.

I am getting to a point now where I get anxious about my safety every time I leave the house and that is not a sustainable situation.

Don't let the press coverage and social media hype stop you from living your life. The press will find something new to play with soon. I do believe we need to increase Police community patrols . Stores and Malls need to review their security.

You sound very out of touch with reality Mike.

My sister was a victim of a serious crime in Lower Hutt Wellington about a year ago when she was out minding her own business, hence some of my passive aggressiveness on this thread. The perpetrators continue to carry on as per normal, the incident has forever changed her life and that of my nephews.

It’s not media hype and I find your comment very insulting.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I am sorry about your sister but anecdotes don't prove anything. Nor does trying to use emotion to score points in an argument.

It is one reason I don't like to use the trains on the Hutt line and instead will drive. Someone I knew from school got beaten up as an adult in one of the alleyways to the station  on the Hutt line several years ago, and it was life changing.  We have all these rules and laws in NZ but they need to be enforced.

We need to go hard on these people. Send them into the military and boot camps IMO. Make them do rock running. That used to be one of the punishments teachers made us do at school, where you have to carry large rocks from the river and run with them, and they built landscaping and walls with the rocks. It was done in public sight so others could  see the punishment being carried out. Don't think they do that these days, but it certainly wore those bad eggs out.

Yep. These people don't know and can't understand.

Similar to the way people with kids understand something that people without don't.

Just catching up on the news over the last few days. An axe attack at Albany restaurants with 3 people suffering injuries! Today a woman going bananas with a hockey stick at a Pak’n’Save click-and-collect!

I would not say that crime like this was ever unheard of in the past, its just the frequency of these events now that is a real worry. I just hope that whoever the next goverment is that they start taking this stuff seriously. It will be really sad if we start to normalise this sort of stuff in NZ.

It must be getting to the point where the police only have sufficient resources to deal with the more serious incidents, so the lower level anti-social behaviour is probably already entrenched.

My worry is that it's going to become a self-perpetuating problem because law abiding people are going to start leaving the country so that they don't have to put up with this.

We going to get to a point where centres ban school children...bad for business but centres need to provide a safe environment for the rest of the customers

thats happened many many many decades ago and is pretty much the norm. police have been under funded and under resourced for generations.

its hilarious when politicians say they will "get tough on crime". all that means is whatever is in the headlines will get attention and all other crime will be ignored.

one of the problems is that govt cuts costs during recessions, but with police you need to increase the budget.

The hockey stick incident seems to be a variation on the common shoplifting-with-threats tactic. The Albany restaurants thing looks like a nutter type going into three different restaurants with no material motive at all. More like mental illness than crime in that case.

the catch is what is the driving factors of this.

a lot of it comes back to the housing market. lowest rate of home ownership, highest amount of homeless/state housing/emergency housing.  not having a stable home plays a big role.

using housing to make profit has driven many kiwis into poverty, so its no surprise these incidents have increased. cost of food etc would not be so much an issue if people where not having to pay 3-4 times the amount for housing. gangs of course feed off poverty. doesn't help the underfunded police have been on the backfoot for decades with the boom in drug trade. the 501's of amplified that. then add in a pandemic where many adults start acting like shitty little teenagers. guess what the shitty little teenagers start acting like.

That kind of schoolkid fight stuff is not new at all and happened long before cell phones. I'm guessing a lot of this stuff starts on social media now and easily escalates when the real people involved bump into each other.
