johno1234:

And now some large cuts announced at TVNZ:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/tvnz-job-cuts-hundreds-of-staff-expect-to-get-certainty-today/LNJP32K2GBGL5IPD53HPDRL4NQ/

Hard to know how public broadcasting can be saved. In the above article it is suggested a $5 per capita per month levy would fund TVNZ. However I don't really like much of anything on TVNZ and for that $25 from our household could fund a couple of streaming services - say Netflix and YT Premium. If I had to chose I would go with the latter.

Regarding the cuts.

1) I am not in the media space, but I would have thought more people watched Fair Go and Sunday than the 6am Breakfast program. Four people to talk absolute rubbish is why TVNZ is incompetent. I, switched to Three simply because I couldn't bear some of the presenters on Breakfast. Three is not great but I prefer the presenters.

2) If I could, I would change the order of the TVNZ 6pm news to: NZ News, World News, Weather, Good Sorts (when on) and finally Sport. Sport seems to get more time allocated to it than World News. 30 minutes should be plenty of time. Of course, it won't be as the adverts will eat up a good chunk of time. Wild idea - 30 minutes of TV ad free. Then back to the reality TV rubbish.

3) I believe Q&A (Sunday) on TVNZ is now the only program asking the hard questions to politicians. Jack Tame is a rottweiler trying to get questions answered. Even he has to give up sometimes.

Another shout out for Jack Tame. He seems very well balanced in his mannerisms, tough. questions and relentlessness in trying to get answers - all while being respectful and mature unlike majority of other presenters with their smug, frustrated, attitudey facials.

Would hate to see him go.

Perhaps, but the Breakfast programme (and seven sharp) is eminently  more monetisable, they often run segments, with "partners" -

"TVNZ is to strengthen transparency around sponsored content on its Breakfast show after revelations the broadcaster was paid $300,000 by a Government agency to air a series of climate change pieces."

"TVNZ allows sponsored content on Breakfast and Seven Sharp, but not 1 News, Sunday, Q+A, Fair Go, or Te Karere

Someone who works in the field says they're choosing the cuts to maximise public outcry. His opinion is that they'd be better off keeping Fair Go and cutting the Six O'clock News, most of whose viewership is people who'd watch paint drying as long as it ran at 6pm.

That sounds believable. Small teams on FG and Sunday. Large team on the news with a lot of expenses.

johno1234: NZHerald used to be the NZ Paper of Record ... now it is dreck.

This is a total over-reaction to use of stock photos in an airline story. I definitely agree use of stock images is an area that needs attention and labelling to build trust. Was the same image used in the print edition? It is possible it was supplied by the airline.

I don't get why they're keeping 4 presenters on Breakfast but cutting Fair Go and Sunday/Q+A? Why not make the news 30 minutes and cut back Breakfast using fewer presenters? Hang onto Fair Go and Sunday and/or Q+A. Something like that.

johno1234: Online article today about International Womens' Day and an all female crew on a JQ flight has had two different stock photos of a female pilot... both with FO stripes, whilst talking about a female captain Katherine Stacey.

That is correct. The article discusses female pilots. An FO "First Officer" is also a pilot. There will be at least two female pilots on the flight.

I'm surprised as I had thought both Fair Go and Sunday did well enough in the ratings that they earned their place. Sunday even has sponsorship. But hey, it'll save the money needed to afford more great shows like last night's My Massive C***

Breakfast shows rate high + and they are on five days a week so times five.

Doesn't Q&A get special funding from NZOA. But it is on at times that few people watch it. It had the content that used to be on at 7pm when Holmes and Campbell Live was running. I question the timing of all these cutbacks with a new government that has just started.

I am surprised to hear that Fair Go is still going. I can remember watching it back in the 80s and 90s when Philip Alpers and Kevin Milne were presenting it, but I had assumed that it was long gone. Do they still have other classic shows like Spot On and What Now?
