an island sufficiently far off shore they cant swim there (can they swim?) - large enough to grow food in terms of long term survival

on the island build several safe houses - just in case

i would make for Stewart Island via boat.

Lots of animals to eat, not many people / zombies to kill. Id gather the family dogs to help me hunt on the way.

Id hole up in my house - completely surrounded by concrete walls and stout door- during nightime until I could make for Lyttelton port during daylight and then sail from there in a decent sized boat.

On the way Id call in at my local gun store and ranscack it for weapons/supplies.

And cardio - lots of cardio!

The force is strong with this one!

Ditto, Id head for Tiritiri Matangi Island - start off in our garage (easiest part of house to defend/secure), then bolt for the local fishing store for bait/rods etc then head to Gulf Harbour to swipe a boat to make for the island. The channel current between the peninsula and the island is strong enough to prevent anything swimming its way across but close enough to the peninsula to raid the stores etc. Theres a bunkhouse on the island already, so got a base to work from....

This helps too...

"In the past, Tiritiri Matangi island’s lighthouse keepers were isolated and had to be self-sufficient. Now, as an open sanctuary, the island again aims to be self-reliant.  Water is collected from roofs and stored in large tanks. Food wastes are composted and sewage disposed of on the island. The composting toilets at the wharf and Hobbs Beach have been operating trouble-free for over 20 years.  Tiritiri Matangi’s energy needs are increasing. Forty solar panels were installed in 2006, making the island less reliant on fossil fuels, and the houses have rooftop solar water heaters."

Isn't there a predator-proof fence across the top of the peninsula ?

There is, but theres usually a lot of people camping etc on the inside , so probably be infected....  could clear it out but only after setting up base on the island.

Theres also the defense force land there but dont know how protected that is, or if theres any munitions stored there.

While i agree that getting to an island sounds like a good idea in theory, there are a few holes in your plans to get there.

Boat
All the plans are relying on getting to a port/habour/marina and jumping into the nearest boat and simply taking off over to the island.
There is a few flaws in this plan, mainly access to the boat.

Firstly, boat owners wouldn't be likely to leave the keys in the ignition ready for the next passer by to take it for a joy ride.

Secondly, these boats will require fuel to get to the island. In the initial breakdown of society there will be lots of looting and power loss is to be expected. This means most fuel pumps (including those at the ports/bays) will be useless.
The other issue is when you get to the island, fuel is not going to be in readily accessible supply, meaning any trips back to the main land (for supplies or support) will require searching for ever decreasing supplies of fuel.

Weapons

I noticed some suggested looting the local firearms shop for supplies, these places are likely first hit by all sorts of people, and the police/owners of the stores will have locked these away very soon after the initial outbreak. or even taken them to protect their own families while holed up in said store.
A far better idea would be to get a firearms license now and some weapons, or make yourself proficient in other forms of weapons that are more readily available (axes, knives, etc)

Except there's only bird-life there to hunt & eat - how many people can sustainably get a reasonable amount of protien from the resident kokako & kiwi? Other offshore islands would have bunnies, and other 4 legged protein-sources (Stoats, rats, goats, pigs, cats etc).

Ahhhhh but you are forgetting those of us from Chch are ready for disaster at any moment.

I keep a few 5l tanks of gas in the garden shed - get changed intermittantly as lawnmower uses em- in case.  Last time was a nightmare getting to petrol stations just after big quakes.

worst case scenario I has access to a small speedboat and trailer

Guns - yeah you got me good point

Good to hear :)

I have based my survival around not relying on petrol for transport, only for survival in the house.  I have, like you, a 20L fuel container under the house which gets put into the car and re-filled monthly to keep it fresh.  I use unleaded fuel and have some stocks of old engine oil.  I am currently working on a efficient way to convert this oil to lamps.

The house that i purchased is elevated so there is only the rear door that is accessible from ground level (even then it is up 5 concrete steps)  during the initial breakout the plan is to dismantle the front steps, board up the back door and hunker down for a month or two.

I have fresh water supplies from the water tanks by the garage, risky and exposed at the moment, but i am looking at purchasing another tank to install under the house that can be connected and isolated from the other tanks.

My overall plan is to ride out the worst, by keeping a low profile, then take it from there.
