I got power back at 620 tonight. YAY

Still no water, loos or POTs. Thank god for mobile generators and ISAM cabinets ;)

I'm unlucky enough to be stuck on the side of CHC the media has sort of forgotten about, or not wanted to remind people of one of the not so wealthy areas of christchurch is going (not far from here)

Sure, the CBD is decimated. But we didn't fare so well over this side either.

We have had EQC, and redcross come by and make some calls for urgent toilets.. but still none. Which is bizzare, as 4 streets either side of ours has them, but don't have 5 houses condemned due to the sewer flowing in their backyard. Fail. Luckily I've been living out of the parental Housebus. only about 5 of my 35 or so neighbours left. Its hard to live with no power or toilets.

My FB public gallery of the surrounding area.

I must add, big ups to Rangiora Highschool. Students spend 2 days here digging silt with me.
Vodafone truck - got here and gave us a wifi point, and free car chargers.
Federated farmers, Army, random people from the SI wide - all have been past and offered water, baking, sandwiches and a hand to do whatever they can.

Having spent the post week shoveling silt and other work on the east side of town I can only say to Geekzoners - please give all the support you can to those in this part of the city. It is truly an extraordinarily desolate part of town. The damage is beyond description. Sept 4 was very bad - this is 10 times worse.

Hoping all of you, Christchurch GeekZoners, are safe and coping okay.

We, my flatmate and I, were fortunate to escape the quake with minor injuries unlike some of our friends/acquaintances. Our house is still standing and received a green sticker for the initial exterior inspection. Electricity were turned off by Orion upon Civil Defence's request, which we understood the need, as they do not want unexpected fire while searching. However, we were not notified nor advised of when it will return. As a result we had to leave our rental accommodation which is inside cordon, very close to Latimer Square. Myself and one other flatmate were offered two rooms with a family in the west side of Christchurch. The other flatmate was offered a bed at her friend's place outside of Christchurch.

We would like to thanks all for your support, and positive thoughts.

We are coping.

CallPlus launches packages to help Canterbury businesses get back on their feet

New Zealand telecommunications provider CallPlus has launched a series of packages designed to assist all Canterbury business customers affected by the recent earthquake become operational.

Around 10 per cent of CallPlus customers have had their telecommunications service impacted to varying degrees since the quake, with around half still not using their services.

Kelvin Hussey, General Manager for CallPlus, stresses that the network is fully available to those who can access it and says the company is now prioritising the needs of affected businesses and providing packages to help them get back on their feet.

“We are committed to helping our customers become operational as quickly as possible with a range of support options.  Having seen the devastating images in the media, we understand that simply being able to communicate and keep in touch is a big comfort to Cantabrians at present,” says Hussey.

“We are trying to contact every Christchurch-based customer to offer our support, however we are experiencing issues trying to reach some people due to building damage or people having evacuated to a safer location.  If you are impacted, please let us know and we’ll do whatever we can to assist.”

Among the solutions CallPlus is offering its customers are:

- A one month relief credit for those customers who experienced interrupted service but are now operational
- Free set up of re-directions for any advertised numbers (including Tollfree) and special calling rates
- Three month’s credit for all fixed line rentals should a customer need to temporarily relocate
- A ‘Relief Calling Plan’ with special discounted calling rates for at least a month
- A waiver on all reconnection or early termination fees should a business relocate on a case by case basis
- Extended terms if customers are under financial strain

Oh, dear... Ken Ring's Earthquake Warning for 20 March 2011.

If he's right, then it's bad. If he's wrong, then good riddance.

A terrible article.

For those who are scared, i.e. those who fear earthquakes and/or those who have been badly affected, and who read this, will be upset.

To state that an earthquake that doesnt follow his theories to be a new event is ridiculous. Many of the 4000 shakes after 4 Sept were aftershocks, if they cane from our area, i.e Canterbury. Since 22 Feb, I feel this is a new event as it has been in a new fault. Darfied was predomanantly the Greendale fault, which has 2 others nearby. Taylors Mistake to Lyttelton is the new fault, and it is 17km long.

The theory he has has some foundation, as the moon does exert a force, and scientists accept that it may possibly cause an aftershock, if there is an aftershock already teetering to go off. Otherwise, the moon cannot exert enough force to create an earthquake.

Can you imagine the force required to make the earth slip? Agreed it is in a stage of slipping, which is what an earthquake is, but what about the other perigees etc during the last 16000 years ( the last movement of the Greendale fault).

If the moons gravitational pull was that strong, surely you would see a variance in our weight during a perigee cycle? I.e us weighing less as we get pulled by the moon.

Cheers

Tony

I think the whole thing is a tad bad, come on! Like this guy "predicts" earthquakes and gives them like a month to go through..

I respect that he has theories and I respect that he believes in them, but this is a bad time to enact more stress on those that are in despair whenever there are aftershocks. Particularly when the 22 Feb related aftershocks are sharper than the 4 Sept ones. Hearing one coming, then the house starts to shake ( geez, it did all that just now , 12-46am) then wondering if it will stop after a few seconds or be a biggie, is a worry.

Arguing about Ken Ring with people drives me nuts. It's pot luck, people seem to ignore every time he gets it wrong. I guess if you want to believe you just have to focus on the random times he gets it right. But it's annoying to hear so many people talk about this guy as if he knows anything more than they do. I sometimes wonder if society could slip back into the dark ages where fearful people have to visit a soothsayer to tell them what will happen next. Life's a mystery folks, and so are earthquakes, stop looking for an easy answer. I do feel sorry for people who suffer from high anxiety (I do know people in this state who have been on edge since September and it's quite sad to see) but they need support and help to carry on with life's routines. They don't need someone who claims to tell them when the next one will come, and then throws out a bunch of dates, most of them never eventuating.
