vhs was what 10 - 20 years old by the 90s, well into its cycle. I can't even remember when DVD came out now, 96 - 97? I know my first ever DVD was a fleetwood mac DVD that I still have

We were still renting VHS tapes until May 07 I think it was when we dumped out of them and we still get asked for them today!

Blu-ray is successful because "consumers" who spend thousands and thousands on their big flat screen TVs want them to look as good as possible, right now, that is Blu-ray. SkyHDi is "ok" at 1080i, but still no hi-def audio and no 1080p24, so its good, but still not a patch on Blu-ray. We have customers that simply won't watch anything less than blu-ray (ofcourse, we have customers that complain about the black bars on DVD too, there are extremes on both ends).

In saying that, blu-ray rental is approx 15% or so of our total movie rentals, but still under 10% of total turnover so still not significant and it still requires a greater investment percentage to grow than DVD does (IE 20 - 25% of DVD turnover is required to maintain or grow, whereas 40% or so of Blu-ray is required).

No content provider will ignore the maths however, hundreds of millions of DVD players, 10s of millions of blu-ray players. They will not abandon that installed user base.

As I said, things will evolve, but not in this country in the immediate or foreseeable future

TiVo service is called Caspa. Is not a Telecom service and it's not a Sky service.

It depends on the title and the format but if we take something like The Dark Knight which is 152min and it's size is 35gb which is only 3.9mbyte/sec or 31mbit/sec.

You can't do it right now but UFB's coming, All it's going to take is a xbox360/ps3 app or cheap STB and a backer with the cash and time to get the rights and it's a win. I have netflix on my ps3 at home and we went from a 2 movie rental per month household to watching something every night and most aren't recent releases or anything, Just random things we liked the look of

With the correct compression equipment you would not need to stream anywhere near 40GB worth of data for a true Blu-ray experience.

Many 'pirate' Blu-ray files are transparent to source and only 9-12GB in size. I am almost certain that some commercial grade compression hardware would be able to achieve a similar service with even smaller files.

In fact it could even be a premium option to increase the bitrate of your feed for those people who really want as many bits as possible.

Why would people buy a pirated movie when they can buy the actual thing legally from somewhere like amazon UK for the same price.?

If amazon UK took out non-stop "harvey norman style" advertising here in NZ piracy sales would stop overnight. Wouldn't stop the downlaoders from downloading for their own personal use though.

Which says a lot IMO for the absolutely disgusting prices charged locally. My sister came to me and asked me to order season 3 of Sons of Anarchy on DVD from the other side of the planet, and it still came to less than half (including shipping!) what Mighty Ape or Whitcoulls would charge. Read carefully: it's cheaper to buy something from the other side of Earth and pay to have it shipped to your door in as little as 3 days, and get a cheapo multi-zone player than it is to buy it from the shop down the road. And before someone says GST, even if you did buy enough to go over the threshold and have to pay it, it's still about half the price. The markup is downright criminal.

I did some comparisons last year between Amazon US and UK and even with postage Amazon US in lots of cases came out way cheaper especially for boxed sets..

Books are just as extreme. Nothing like finding a paper back book on sale 50% off (mighty ape), and it is _still_ cheaper to get the kindle edition from the US. Even better, the UK kindle edition is even cheaper, we're just not allowed to buy that one.

I bought the harry potter collection for NZ$40 from Amazon UK whereas the cheapest price in NZ was $120. A third of the price!

If builders, doctors, lawyers, drain layers or any other trade found it a bit hard to survive these days, you might think it a bit over zealous to have them turn around and round up all the architects, even better if they conspired to have people rounded up and prosecuted by nations other than out own, arriving on your front door step in a couple of helicopters, lame but effective public defamation of your character due to your choice of vehicle numberplates. having all of your possesions stolen by the americans because you hurt hollywood by $500 million dollars.

Bad weather probably costs hollywood 500 million a day

That 500 million figure, i seriously suspect, was achieved by adding up the money it would take for your whole family to go and see that movie, with popcorn.

I find it highly ironic that somewhere in Russia is a group of hackers who have probably had more harm on the individual by the mass sending of viruses, yet they still sit there. T shirt manufacturers who use Nike, Adidas logo's , still sit there , making money by impersonating the big brands. No helicopters for them!

My point is, and I'm NOT saying what kim.com did is OK , but when does it become OK for the yanks, god bless them of course, who are not yet at least officially the world police, to come along and drag people off for such crimes , when it isn't even in their jurisdiction. Last time I checked the internet was not owned or regulated, by hollywood or anyone else.

Why ? just because of hollywood. I think the answer is yes.
Weve seen, and we will see more attempts to control and regulate the internet.
THAT NEEDS TO STOP.
I agree the outright copying and distribution of material needs to be controlled to some extent but frankly if I told you "I was going to make a movie that was to be distributed to every man and his dog world wide, It wouldn't be hard to generate and inject value into the movie, before it is distributed." - DUH

Its time for movie companies to think differently,
It's time for governments to but out
oh, crap, helicopters ahead, they must be after my Jason Gunn reruns, better go hide :)

That doesn't make much sense, because why wouldn't they use that compression on Blu-ray in the first place? Either it's new technology (possible, I've no idea) or there is something missing. Is MP3 "transparent to source" vs CD? Some would say so.
