neb: There's an article in the latest Consumer where someone is complaining that the bearings on their F&P washing machine have failed after a bit under five years, probably four years nine months given the publication lead. In that time it's done 2,279 wash cycles.

That means they've done between one and two loads of washing every single day, 365 days a year, since the day they bought it. Admittedly there may have been breaks, maybe they ran it all day long on the 24th to do five or six loads that day and then had a break Christmas day and Boxing day, but W/T/F? I'm sure there are large industrial-strength commercial machines in the local laundromat that have had less use than that.

that's what annoys me a little about those people who go on about what consumer says the lifespan should be

Washing machines - Life expectancy: 10 years (top and front loaders)

That's cool and all but how much use has it had in those 10 years? is it granny doing 2-3 loads a week or is it like the family above doing 1-2 loads a day. Huge difference in use over the same time period. should they last the same time?

That sounds pretty typical use in our house. It would hardly be unusual for a family to do washing every day for normal clothes then you have sheets etc to wash.

It is not unreasonable for a family machine to wash daily, especially with children.

So long as it is not being used commercially, then daily would be fair and reasonable.

Having machines just sitting can be equally damaging due to inherent humidity and for bearing being point contact with they leave "bruises" over time. You should also be faint hot washes periodically ro help keep any flexible parts stay flexible and to help prevent build up of soaps etc.

oh 100%, its just they say 10 years, with no caveat on usage. Its like anything, the more you use it the faster it will fail.

I do 3-4 loads a week in mine for just me, so I dont think that 10 a week is unreasonable for a family with dirty kids and a tradesman, it would be what I would expect TBH.

Yep, I live alone and manage to do three normal loads per week, plus some short cycles for my running/swimming gear.

Amongst the videos on how to replace similar washing machine bearings one example had the bearing closest to the water completely collapsed. I'd say the life depends on the water seal. If that stays intact the bearings look large enough to last for a long time.

Hence the need to do the occasional hot wash, it keeps the seals more flexible and it helps remove crud build up that can wear the seals.

I almost never do an actual cold wash because it is so ineffective and the actual power use on a front loader doing it at 60 is minimal - its not even running for 90 mins so at 2kw that could be no more than 3kwh assuming it was heating all the time, which its not.

I have only had a top loader, the seals are MUCH simpler due to the design.

Wall Street Journal: Boeing Tells Airlines to Check 787 Cockpit Seats After Mishap on Latam Flight

Boeing advised airlines to check the cockpit seats on 787 Dreamliner jets after a seat mishap likely pushed a pilot into the controls, causing a sudden, terrifying plunge on a flight to New Zealand this week.

A Latam Airlines flight attendant hit a switch on the pilot’s seat while serving a meal, leading a motorized feature to push the pilot into the controls and push down the plane’s nose, according to U.S. industry officials briefed on preliminary evidence from an investigation. The switch, on the back of the chair, is usually covered and isn’t supposed to be used when a pilot is in the seat.

Putting a drink bottle into the freezer in the hope that the contents might be at least a bit chilled by the time I finish a quick job in the garden.

ANOTHER Boeing incident.

Apparently airlines are now allowing passengers to carry screwdrivers, pliers, and other previously-banned items onto Boeing flights, just in case they need to put bits of the plane back together mid-flight.

Keep a "freezer teatowel" nearby. When you want to speed-chill something, soak it in water, then wrap it around the drink and chuck it in the freezer - it seems to significantly speed up getting it down to an acceptable temperature.
