Gurezaemon:

Keep a "freezer teatowel" nearby. When you want to speed-chill something, soak it in water, then wrap it around the drink and chuck it in the freezer - it seems to significantly speed up getting it down to an acceptable temperature.

The problem wasn't lack of cooling, it was too much, by the time the supposedly short job had finished, and the other one, and the other one, and the next one, the drink was excessively chilled. Luckily the bottle held up.

Not really much of a sports fan but for a bit of family time I took my son to the Phoenix game at Eden Park tonight.

Our seats were next to what was called the Away Team section, which had a few fans from the Australian team there.

There was a bunch of people trying to start a mexican wave down the front so my son wandered down to be part of the fun and they got a couple of waves going.   Some meataxe woman from the away fans took it upon herself to get in my sons face, called him an F'ing C word, slapped him across the face and tried to rip off the Phoenix scarf he had on.   He's a 12 year old kid ffs, what is wrong with her??

The cops pulled her aside, but basically did nothing.

I'd heard about football hooligans, but kind of thought this was an overseas thing and wouldn't happen here.

Not sure we'll bother going back again if this is the crap that can happen at soccer games.  We'd been having a real fun time up until then, but its not worth it if this is the garbage we can expect.

"Adult" woman assaults child and gets away with it. Should have been at least evicted and banned from future games.  Hope your son is alright.

Before the incident, the robot said this canned speech: "I am Muhammad, the first Saudi robot in the form of a man. I was manufactured and developed here in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a national project to demonstrate our achievements in the field of artificial intelligence"

It's creator, QSS, told Metro newspaper that it's "fully autonomous" and operates "independently without direct human control."

I would say that robot is doing exactly what it was trained to. Aren't women in Saudi Arabia objects to serve the desires of men?

That approach is not going to work if the goal is preventing soccer violence. Random adult assaulting random child. Did the officers identify you as a parent and explain the situation to you?

I'd guess the robot has a gesture programmed to emphasise speech and has limited awareness of things near it. Looks like the robot lifted it's arm to make a gesture related to starting speech.

Or it's like that Russian robot that was robot on the outside, human on the inside. Saudi Arabia isn't exactly a hotbed of cybernetics research able to produce advanced robots, I expect this is more a media stunt than anything else.

How would you test that? Chopping the offending hand off seems traditional.

As bad as the Saudi Arabian robot was, it's better than the Disney's Hall of Presidents' Trump

Jammer! He Just Wanted Privacy, But This Little Device Caused Big Trouble

Published this week

YLE: Finland detects more GPS jammers as drivers increasingly try to hide their tracks

The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) has so far this year detected 106 GPS disturbances caused by signal jamming devices in vehicles.

Some drivers use the small, low-power devices to conceal the location of their vehicles, tachographs (which record vehicles' speed and distance) or smartphones, according to the Head of Spectrum Management at Traficom.

When activated, the devices interfere with GPS signals in a relatively small radius that measure from a few dozen to several hundred metres.

Authorities have found people using the jammers in company cars tracked by their employers. Lorry drivers also sometimes try to disrupt tachographs that track where and when they are driving.

When a jammer is found turned on in a company car, for example, Traficom contacts the firm that owns the vehicle.

A University of Helsinki data analysis professor use of the small jamming devices is a growing problem in Finland. She noted that the electronic gadgets are available online for as little as a few dozen euros.

Tinkerisk:

My rough-haired dachshund Skipper sneaked off during an invitation visit to honourable city officials and undertook an exploratory tour of the conservatory on his own.

In the process, he peed on their old, probably rather expensive bonsai tree, which was temporarily standing on the floor for watering. I was terribly embarrassed and this rogue acted as if it was „his royal“ right to pee wherever he wanted.

Now we all hope that the dose will not be fatal for the "little tree".

Update:

I received a letter in the mail yesterday after the bonsai tree outlasted Skipper's „treatment,“ even more so that it is sprouting better than average this spring!

We are specifically invited to join with „His Majesty Skipper“ next year again. Well, if it isn't going to be a pee party! I thought this would be a case for dog liability insurance.

The 68-yo brother of a close friend died recently - he was admitted into hospital and died after a few days.

He had contracted a virus that had destroyed his spleen and kidneys. There was no way to treat the virus or its effects. The hospital has not identified the virus type - or if they have, they have not passed this on to the family.

There was no autopsy, he was not able to be embalmed prior to the funeral and his body had to be cold-stored - apparently all due to danger to staff from the virus. The funeral was held as quickly as possible.

I have never heard of this before and neither has Mrs Code, an experienced nurse. Very scary.
