freitasm: An aquarist or keen fisherman?
No - nothing like that. Are there scary viruses associated with those activities?
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Apparently, some fish have spleen and kidney viruses.
I am not a doctor, scientist or researcher. But it does seem strange to not have identified the cause yet.

The 68-yo brother of a close friend died recently - he was admitted into hospital and died after a few days.
He had contracted a virus that had destroyed his spleen and kidneys. There was no way to treat the virus or its effects. The hospital has not identified the virus type - or if they have, they have not passed this on to the family.
There was no autopsy, he was not able to be embalmed prior to the funeral and his body had to be cold-stored - apparently all due to danger to staff from the virus. The funeral was held as quickly as possible.
I have never heard of this before and neither has Mrs Code, an experienced nurse. Very scary.
Which hospital did this happen at?

North Shore.

That approach is not going to work if the goal is preventing soccer violence. Random adult assaulting random child. Did the officers identify you as a parent and explain the situation to you?
No, we left them alone to do their thing and when they finished they were dismissive towards us and didn't want to discuss it any further.

What freitasm is refering to is: "Infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) is a species within the genus Megalocytivirus (family Iridoviridae), which causes high mortality disease in many freshwater and marine fish species." It is not known to be a Zoonotic Diseases - an infectious disease that is transmitted between species from animals to humans.
There is however "Lassa fever" which is carried by rodents in Africa where it is endemic and is transmitted via rodent faeces and urine.

Yes that is very scary. I presume the hospital took loads of pathology samples; serums, blood, tissue etc as this could well be a reportable disease. One would hope it was reported anyway
Sorry for your families loss.
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Police Complaints Authority ?
At minimum they should have been removed from the stadium.
Here is a reddit one about some kiwis in Thailand beating up a cop and taking his gun.

They are in for a lot of hurt.

No brain, no pain.

The Ministry for Disabled People has effectively just cut respite funding for most disabled people and parents of disabled people, by introducing new rules that effectively state you can now only pay for a third party carer, most other costs are excluded. The rules were clearly written by people without real world experience of caring for those with disabilities and the stresses and costs that come with it.
The cynic in me wonders if this way people won't be able to claim so much, so that they can justify cutting the actual funding allocations next year 'oh, you didn't use it so you clearly don't need it'

In these cases all people can do is stop the government from using them for free and put the people into state care which in reality will cost a damn sight more for a much poorer outcome.
It called "going on strike".

Some of the comments on that post are pretty funny

The Ministry has to spend 6.5% less - politicians call this "savings"

Not really much of a sports fan but for a bit of family time I took my son to the Phoenix game at Eden Park tonight.
Our seats were next to what was called the Away Team section, which had a few fans from the Australian team there.
There was a bunch of people trying to start a mexican wave down the front so my son wandered down to be part of the fun and they got a couple of waves going. Some meataxe woman from the away fans took it upon herself to get in my sons face, called him an F'ing C word, slapped him across the face and tried to rip off the Phoenix scarf he had on. He's a 12 year old kid ffs, what is wrong with her??
The cops pulled her aside, but basically did nothing.
I'd heard about football hooligans, but kind of thought this was an overseas thing and wouldn't happen here.
Not sure we'll bother going back again if this is the crap that can happen at soccer games. We'd been having a real fun time up until then, but its not worth it if this is the garbage we can expect.
Wow, you have massive amount of self control. If my kid got slapped by an adult and police were present, I'd have insisted on pressing charges. What I would have had to say about it, to her, would have made what she said, seem like a bedtime story.
