sir1963: Wonder if the [politicians] will close Bellamys ... who are we kidding...they are entitled

Restaurant in Beehive
$90 - 100 per person.

The most I've ever spent on a meal for myself is $40.

I saw pictures of the meals. As you'd imagine, very, very tiny portions, covering less than 30% of the plate.

$90 is just spending money to spend money.

sir1963:

mrdrifter:

The Ministry for Disabled People has effectively just cut respite funding for most disabled people and parents of disabled people, by introducing new rules that effectively state you can now only pay for a third party carer, most other costs are excluded. The rules were clearly written by people without real world experience of caring for those with disabilities and the stresses and costs that come with it.

The cynic in me wonders if this way people won't be able to claim so much, so that they can justify cutting the actual funding allocations next year 'oh, you didn't use it so you clearly don't need it'

In these cases all people can do is stop the government from using them for free and put the people into state care which in reality will cost a damn sight more for a much poorer outcome.
It called "going on strike".

Was there not a court case which found family were correct to provide some of those costs and with backpay?

Hmmm:

Tip Top said this when the regulations were relaxed from containing 10% minimum milk fat for Ice Cream (To no requirement):

"Ice-cream maker Tip Top says the proposal could threaten NZ's international reputation for quality ice cream."

Hmmm......

Looks like they "rolled over" toooo......no change to the label except the nutritional details!

Only 8.8% Total Fat now! That's why it seems less "creamy" than it used to!

I like how a New Zealand brand put "Glucose Syrup (From Maize)" in the label - when "maize" is known as corn in New Zealand and Australia.

Too much to not have corn syrup?

Am I missing something? They clearly state that "Ice Cream contains a minimum 10% milk fat" on the label?

richms: Here is a reddit one about some kiwis in Thailand beating up a cop and taking his gun.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Thailand/comments/1bgt4yk/one_point_to_new_zealand/.
They are in for a lot of hurt.

I feel very bad for the Thais who had to deal with this entitled behaviour. Watching this it is the first time I can recall feeling embarrassed as a New Zealander. Now I know how other nationalities feel when they feel a need to apologise for behaviour of compatriots. I always say it is not necessary but now I understand the feeling.

I think you are right - it's 10% fat milk, all up is 8.8% total fat (which is all ingredients, not only milk).

Dare I say it, but Deep South Hokey Pokey Ice Cream is still over 10% Total Fat in the Nutritional Panel.

Used to be over 12% before Talley's bought it.

I will be looking more closely at the NIP (Nutritional Information Panel) in future.

I hadn't realised the rules had changed. I remember going to the original Food Standards Australia & New Zealand meetings.....and the blue folders with all the rules etc.

I did many Ice Cream NIP's in those days. We even did fat tests etc to confirm the calculation accuracy regularly too.

I've had a couple of shakes at Carl Jr's. It feels like drinking clotted cream. I did wonder if the fat content came entirely from milk solids or something else.

I think they probably do that to distinguish it from High Fructose Corn Syrup, which is weird since HFCS isn't used for anything in Australia and New Zealand.

Though, curiously, looking at health/industry/informational websites, "maize" does seem to always be used in Australia and New Zealand when referring to glucose syrup derived from corn or corn starch.

Examples:

Glucose syrup derived from wheat - Coeliac Australia

Glucose Syrup 3.650 | Australian Food Ingredient Suppliers (afis.com.au)

https://nzic.org.nz/unsecure_files/book/6F.pdf

Equagold Glucose Syrup 1kg – EQUAGOLD

Glo Hearts (Mayceys) – LollyShop NZ

And that's just from two pages of search.

It could be. I just think it's weird.

Admitting to using high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a bit like admitting to using asbestos, so hiding it under another name makes sense.

Ge0rge: They clearly state that "Ice Cream contains a minimum 10% milk fat" on the label?

The label can say anything it wants, it's the nutrition information where they have to tell the truth, and that's saying well under 10% fat.

However, they can easily be bending the truth via "minimum 10% milk fat" if they use, say, 85% vegetable fat and 15% milk fat, so of the fat used, a minimum of 10% is milk fat - it doesn't say "consists of" or "comprises" but just "contains".

Could not disagree more strongly. Just because YOU don't see the value, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Confirmation bias favors information that aligns with our existing beliefs or biases. Essentially, we tend to see what we want to see and discard conflicting information.

When customers already perceive an expensive meal as having value, they seek evidence that confirms this belief.

Expensive restaurants reinforce these biases by emphasizing positive aspects and downplaying any flaws, such as tiny, tiny meal size.
