Some of your posts trying to be funny are just really sad.

When these type of people live next to and terrify your elderly loved ones you’d probably find it less funny.

No that would not be funny but neither is using extreme examples to tar everyone else with the same brush.
Tenants who terrorise their neighbours unfortunately do exist, but so do a lot of responsible, reasonable renters who pay their bills on time. Like I said before, I don't like sweeping generalisaitons.

I hadn't noticed the sweeping generalisations in this thread - could you give me an example?

kingdragonfly:You do NOT need a law degree in the [named] states to be a magistrate, which have the power to issue search warrants.

Likewise in many places in the states there is no qualification or training required to be a police officer and in some cases recent criminal convictions are not a barrier. Back to your subject..

You might be surprised to learn in NZ Justices Of The Peace can, and do regularly issue search warrants. A law degree or prior legal training is not required.

What have responsible renters got to do with what was posted? It was very clearly about a small group of highly antisocial people.

What was posted was a comment criticising objections to the policy change. I simply stated that I don’t like sweeping generalisations. Then you jumped in with examples (hypothesised or drawn from your own experience?) of extreme antisocial behavior.

Since you clearly have such a need to have the last word, I will be generous. Go ahead.

johno1234: long term KO tenants who:

One thing I really dislike about so much of the public discourse about Kainga Ora is that it paints Kainga Ora tennants as bad people. It isn't true. I think part of it comes from being a state service - people tend to feel a right to criticize and expect the state to resolve issues. That's ok but I really wish people would be a lot more sensitive to the majority of state tennants who are not the issue here.

Surprised @Mikeb4 hasn't beaten me to this one.

The new "Stealth" disability funding cuts. Yesterday Whaikaha (Ministry of Disabled People) announced with zero notice or consultation (even the funding providers didn't know in advance), sweeping new restrictions on what disability funding can be used for.  No travel at all (e.g. I can no longer reimburse my caregiver mileage for taking my son to school, nevermind take a caregiver on trips). No purchase of items that offer respite (e.g. no noise cancelling headphones, sensory items, trampolines etc for autistic kids). They can claim they are not cutting any funding, because I'm still entitled to the same level of funding, but I won't be able to spend it on anything other than basic wages (and it's the usual you spend it or you lose it situation).

The public service gossip grapevine says it's a direct commandment from the PM.

johno1234:

We have long term KO tenants who: don't pay rent, abuse their neighbours, assault their neighbours, vandalise the property, steal the whiteware (then claim for replacement) and under existing management, cannot be evicted. This has so change. I can't even blame these feral tenants. If KO are effectively saying "do whatever you want and pay no rent and we won't do anything" then of course they won't change their behaviour.

I am surprised the 'do gooders' in our communities are not up-in-arms over this in relation to the children of these recidivist maleficent delinquent parents and other supposedly example setting adults.

Oh No - the children will be sleeping in cars, other peoples couches, in doorways. Oh No, Oranga Tamariki and Tamariki Ora will take the children away into supposedly responsible care.

"Actions have consequences". All these parents are teaching these kids are that they do not have to take "responsibility for their actions" because they will go unpunished by authorities. As it is, a lot of the 'in home punishment', verbal and physical, is because they have annoyed the parent or other adults. If they punched a hole in the tenancy wall or stole a car, they properly would go unpunished at home.

But then New Zealand child services brings up a whole other 'kettle of fish'. I remember just before I retired from paediatric nursing here in NZ, they had a bureaucratic restructure from 'Child Youth and Family Services' to Oranga Tamariki. I opened my undiplomatic big mouth at work and said "well that's just rearranging the chairs on the Titanic". Well! that did not go down well at all. But since 2017 my comment has proven time and time again to be accurate.

All these adult behaviours are teaching these children to be recidivist maleficent delinquent adults and parents. And around the circle WE ALL go.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Sigh. It used to be possible to have a reasonable discussion with you but these days it's snide comments and passive aggresive nonsense. It's a shame.

The problem with the way Kainga Ora was managing anti-social tenants created the problem. If the behaviour had been dealt with and the bad tenants moved on having Kainga Ora tenants wouldn't have the same stigma.

There's always going to be some stigma around being housed by the state but when people have neighbours who cause massive problems and nothing is done that is what paints all Kainga Ora tenants as being the bad people. It's not the discourse, it's the anti social tenants which are the problem.

I was not aware that being a Kainga Ora tennant had any stigma attached at all.

Likewise it is often forgotten that in shared Kainga Ora tenancies other tennants have exactly the same issue. In many cases talking to those people who put up with the same behaviour and have knowledge of the situations may create innovative solutions.

You really can't be serious.

Living in a state house has always had a stigma. My dad grew up in one, as did many people, and it always had a stigma and always will.

Yep, spent many years in one. The stigma is very real and has been around a long long time.

I'll take your word for it. Despite knowing state tennants it is not something I've heard from real people.

Maybe it depended on where you lived. My recollections were that the long term state house renters had more spare cash for things like cars and holidays. A reverse stigma if you like.
