Pasta normally comes in 500 gram packs. Pasta Maria at Packnsave have all their packs now at 400 grams. Definite shrinkflation as I happened to have an old packet at 500gm.

That IS really annoying. Most pasta recipes call for 250 or 500grams. For us 1 pack used to do two meals. now, we have to open a second pack and keep odd amounts of pasta hanging around.

I cook past by the handful. One handful (spaghetti, bucatini) or two (rigatoni) is usually good for two people.

I often have a few Arnotts Kruskits, with toppings, for lunch. In the past when I opened a new pack, I had to use four biscuits to get the biscuits remaining in the pack to fit nicely into a standard, square Systema box.

Recently have noticed that I only need to remove three to get the remainder into the box. Arnotts have reduced by one the number of biscuits in a pack - but the price has not reduced.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

It may be location-dependent, in central Orkland there's no problems exchanging cash in any of the widely-used currencies, presumably to cater to the tourist market. In (say) Hamilton I would assume there'd be less demand for this.

It depends on how much. If it's more than a very small amount the currency exchange places have to do AML now. Not sure what the threshold is, they wouldn't tell me.

Speaking as someone who sets a digital timer when brewing tea, the vagueness of your methodology causes cognitive dissonance!

My good wife would drive you nuts. If I ask her how much (insert substance) her reply is "some", "a bit", . Ask how long to cook, "until its done" and so on.

It's the flair, the satisfaction of mixing things and the surprise of getting a satisfying result - or sometimes rubbish and thinking "Next time I will add a bit more salt, a bit more oil or less of that..."

I can relate to that. I need a recipe that is listed to the gm, and to the minute and degree, then I'm ok

And the packet size is the same, surely?

Yes, but I noticed it just felt emptier.

The saddest part of the 400gram pasta packets is that it’s most likely the biggest go to for poorer families. I notice Pasta Maria is the only brand that has done this so far. It was carried by The Warehouse in the past.

The new pack appears to be about 8 mil wider so it sits flatter. I measured the flat crimped ends

My coffee machine.

A while back, I splashed out and bought a Swiss-made Jura fully automatic machine. Now, it turns out, I have a fussy, needy, manipulative robo-Hausfrau-barista in my kitchen.

Every time I want a cup of coffee, it seems that it wants to do something first, which usually means it wants me to do something first. Before making coffee, it feels the need to do an automatic rinse, so no immediate wakeup reward for me first thing in the morning -- work & cleanliness come first! This is not the vibe that I need first thing in the morning! Also before shutting down, so it waits patiently for me to make a second cup, then gives up in a little hissy fit of rinsing.

There is one line of the screen reserved for its commands to me, such as refilling the water tank. The first, or is it most important?, of the task queue is displayed on the screen. It deliberately conceals further tasks, so that you can't optimise the emptying of things, and have no idea how long it will before you get that much-needed caffeine hit.

Obviously, it wants water. Of course, the reservoir size is generous if you only ever drink espresso, but woefully inadequate for long blacks, so it needs refilling about daily. There's also the water filter, which needs to be replaced every month or two. You need to empty the tank to replace it, then fill the tank. You then report back with "Mission successful", and the machine primes the filter by slurping about half a tank of water, meaning you'll have to refill the tank again soon. And spitting it out into the drip tray, which you'll have to empty.

As well, every so often the machine needs to be cleaned, and who could argue that cleanliness isn't next to godliness? Cleaning is fully automatic... apart from all the stuff I have to do, that is. Again, cleaning slurps about half a tankful of water. Oh, but wait! Before cleaning, the coffee grounds must be emptied. And the drip tray. And the water tank filled. And a cleaning pellet dropped into the bowels of the machine. It tells you about each of these one by one so you can't set it to clean and walk away. And the milk frother needs to be rinsed after each use, and also cleaned periodically.

And beans. There's a hinged lid over the bean hopper. Inside is a little square plastic cover over the bean hopper itself, whose sole function seems to be so the machine can refuse to make coffee if you haven't replaced the cover correctly. Being square, there are of course 4 possible orientations, of which only 1 is correct. TBH, I'm surprised it isn't octagonal or duodecagonal. Of course, the fractions of of water capacity and bean hopper size per coffee are mutually prime, so it needs one or other replenished somewhat often, and occasionally both.

Admittedly, you can ignore the cleaning & filter demands, in which case it gives a sad little passive-aggressive "Bloop" each time I make myself a coffee. Which is really disappointing, because if I was the engineer who created it, I would have used "Tch, tch, tch".

It's the manufacturers thoughtfully helping you with your diet plan, now instead of a 500g portion they're assisting you in making 400g portions. The fact that the price has (presumably) stayed the same is their dietician's consulting fee.

Same here, I empty the pasta into (say) a spaghetti container for storage and then just take out what's required at the time.

I wonder if cooking an entire packet at once is a kind of self-regulating mechanism, as demonstrated by multiple experiments showing people will eat whatever size portion is in front of them and so you can control eating by controlling portions? My previous comment was meant as a joke but there may be something there.

Sounds like Mother Neb, it has to be exactly three minutes, not a second more or less. In my case it's more like "the cup still feels vaguely warm, I must have poured the water in within the last 30 minutes or so".

It's possible I was adopted.

We received a letter stating that unneccesary roadworks were scheduled for X day in our road. Chipsealing. "Please move cars off the road on the day we are planning to ruin your street".

Needless to say, after parking the various steeds of children and their friends/girlfriends around the corner, down the street and up the wazoo for the last few days, the roadworks still havent happened and don't look like they're happening any time soon.

Someone at work was trying to do her first ever Christmas fruitcake last year. "Add some brandy", says the recipe. "How much is 'some?!'" she declares.
