From "CEO salaries: Who took a Covid cut, and who got a pay rise anyway":

Precinct Properties chief executive Scott Pritchard’s total remuneration increased by about $7000, from $1.78m in the year to June 2019 to $1.85m in the year to June 2020.

Maths fail. I think it's a bit more - actually ten times more than "$7000". Try $70,000.

Er - hypodermic is related to "under the skin" (from Greek dermos). It has nothing to do with hypothermia (from Greek thermos).

If they were tangled in hooks, they quite possibly could have been hypodermic as well.

I see the caption has now been replaced with "A St John ambulance was called to take the two men with hypothermia to North Shore Hospital. Photo / Supplied"

RNZ has a story about rioting in a beach holiday town. I quote it:
---
Goudie said there are about 400,000 people currently in the town for the New Year which has been spoiled by the appalling behaviour of a few.
---

No wonder they're rioting, the queue for the toilet must be extremely long.

Here is a CNN headline: These kids are creating epic sci-fi short films using their phones, and Hollywood is paying attention

The very definition of the word 'epic' is large, lengthy, huge, massive, BIG. So how can a 'short' film be 'epic'?

They are undoubtedly using 'epic' in exactly the same sense as the "Epic YouTube Videos" Geekzone thread.

Depending on your point of view, this is either: just another example of the dynamism of the modern English language, flexing and moving to accommodate the shifting usages of the contemporary world; or just another example of the lazy habits of young people today, bastardising the English language because they're too idle and/or too ignorant to find and use the correct word
🤷‍♂️

There's something to be said about the way in which a headline is written in relation to the body of the article where accuracy is concerned.

I read this headline and thought "Oh crap, there's going to be a humongous lightning strike in 2 hours? And there will be more after that? I'd better wind up the windows on my car!"

Nope. Turns out Dannevirke just had a lot of lightning.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/300176846/when-a-volcano-erupts-and-you-are-the-rescuer--emergency-services-look-back-at-whakaari

Actually emergency services rescued nobody during this disaster. All the rescuing was done by volunteers. All emergency services did on this occasion was stop the volunteers from finishing off the job they started.

NZ Herald Webpage this morning: "Expert says Covid tracer app use too low to be impactful"

The rampant rise in the use of impact will impact (sic) us long after COVID ceases to be a thing anyone cares about. Learn the difference between effect and affect, and use them!
