Pedestrian crossing in Iceland - painted to slow motorists down.

That is wicked. We should have this. One thing that I always have concerns about, is that many motorists don't understand that unless there is an island in the middle of your ped crossing, you are obliged to remain stationary till the peds feet touch the other side of the crossing, not just the side of the road you are on.

No, we shouldn't. The road is no place for artwork. Markings need to be clear and unambiguous. As far as I'm concerned, that's not a legal crossing.

Luckily we don't get to make up all our own road rules.  It looks to be effective.  If they want to implement here, perhaps with a minor tweak to legislation if needed, then I'm all for it.

Near where I live they've painted a 10 or so metre section blue in a 50kph zone and put a sign "Slow Zone".  Now that is ambiguous.

I recall reading about this years ago, so I believe they already have these in NZ. If the artist's impression is anything to go by, they are so far removed from a conventional crossing, they should be illegal.

Well they probably should be if the Dunedin example was rolled out:

Close but no banana - the cartoons aren't needed and detract from the effect, IMO.

If you hit a car from behind, it's always your fault, you should have been paying attention. I see nothing that prevents this idea being implemented immediately.

really you cant see anything wrong with that?

do you get annoyed at rubberneckers when there is an accident on the other side of the motorway?

Not so, you have to give way while the pedestrian is approaching you but that doesn't mean waiting until they've cleared the crossing.

"When coming up to pedestrian crossings:

slow down and be ready to stop for any pedestrians stepping onto, or on, the crossing – this also includes people obviously waiting to use the crossing
if there is no raised traffic island in the middle of the crossing, stop and give way to pedestrians on any part of the crossing
if there is a raised traffic island in the middle of the crossing, stop and give way to pedestrians on your half of the road
wait until the pedestrian has crossed in front of you and is clear of your vehicle before you proceed (see page 145 for the definition of giving way)."

"Giving way means that the road user you're giving way to (whether they are a driver, cyclist, pedestrian or any other kind of road user) doesn't need to stop, brake or slow down, swerve or take any other evasive action to avoid you."

I came into the office this morning and saw actual live humans that I work with on a daily basis in cyberspace.

Made me smile.

I might take a couple of them out for coffee soon.

It says "stop" and give way.  I interpret that as meaning stay stopped until that crossing is clear from pedestrians, or you'll risk bowling kids or anybody else who suddenly decide to cross because traffic is stopped, especially if they're crossing from the other direction or by cars that should have stopped from the other direction once you move off.

Anyway we shouldn't be arguing about this, the way the rule is worded on NZTA website should be changed to avoid any ambiguity.  Maybe we should send them a note.

AA's interpretation is the same as mine:

When driving towards a crossing, check both sides, slow down and be ready to stop for pedestrians, including people waiting at the crossing. Remain stopped until they’ve crossed the entire road and reached the footpath, or, if the crossing has a central refuge, until they have crossed your side of the road.

just to add further confusion, the legislation says something different again (from NZTA site and AA).  It doesn't say to "stop", just to give way:

https://www.legislation.govt.nz/regulation/public/2004/0427/55.0/DLM303663.html

(subsequent amendments don't add a requirement to stop)

Geekzone ads suggesting I should groom my genitalia.

Really not sure what sort of fuzzy logic (see what I did there 😃) it uses to decide to target me with ads like that.

Serves you right for putting a Nest (= Google) cam in your bathroom, now they're targeting you with ads based on data you really didn't plan to reveal...
