My further adventures in retrocomputing still bring a smile to my face.
Last night, after an insanely busy couple of weeks, I finally got around to install the GoEx drive in my Amiga 500. I ordered it months ago, it arrived a fortnight ago, and last night after the kids were in bed, I settled in for a great evening disassembling my faithful old friend and installing a shiny new "floppy drive." Hardware install was easy-peasy, apart from a little bit of prising apart of the grill to slide through the cable for the OLED display which sits on top of the case. Then I spent time copying over ADF files, testing it out, and working out how the GoEx operates - all without a manual. And that's what made me smile, because back in 1991 when I got my Amiga 500, there was no ready access to information online like we have today, where almost anything can be solved via Google or Youtube in a matter of minutes. So as I spent time experimenting with my new gadget, deliberately not googling, I was taken back in time to my foundational computing roots. Then I looked up and saw it was nearly midnight, and smiled again as it reminded me of how as a kid I would be sucked into fascinating worlds of games and demos, staying up way past official bedtimes. The more things change...
