Edge of Tomorrow... Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt. It was a surprisingly good movie. Recommend it.

scuwp: Lucy - What promise it held at the start, then spiraled into absolute stupidity. Shame really. Can't believe this got 6.5 on IMDB!! I would give it a 1.5

The Equalizer - Stylish and occasionally brutal, but Denzel at his best as an ex government agent who helps out the little guy. Marton Csokas (Leonard from Shortland Street so my wife tells me) has certainly done well for himself, who knew he could pull off a Russian mobster. A brilliant couple of hours, highly recomended 10/10.

...If only someone would make a movie pitting Robert McCall (Denzel in the Equalizer) and Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson in Taken) against each other, that would be awesome!

I couldn't get past the ruination of the source material. Edward Woodward must be spinning in his grave.

ilovemusic: i never found the long-winded big-shot director jackson to be a particularly good story teller.

as the visuals got more sophisticated, his films got worse.

now that this hobbit nonsense has finished he needs to get back to basics film making.

meanwhile...

i watched deliverance on blu-ray (excellent film 8/10), same week that campbell live has been running stories on piggies...

I agree - even though saying so is heresy in these parts!

Inventing characters so you can make the film PC - no, no and thrice no. Inventing plot lines so you can stretch a book of only 287 pages to last 3 whole cinema films - again, no.

Also, why is Thorin, a dwarf, clearly not much of a dwarf?!

I remain undecided whether to assist PJ in running his Gulf Stream by watching this at vast expense in the cinema.

I really would avoid lining Jackson's pockets if I were you. He has caught the same disease that George Lucas and James Cameron have: big budgets and lots of flashy CGI do not make up for a lack of story.

All these three men were once really creative and made great movies on a shoe string budget. Now look at their output in the last decade or more.

The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies. 7/10

A little hard to rate - it was stunningly good in places; but unfortunately also unsatisfying in others. However, it does end the series nicely, and was overall an enjoyable movie - despite a few OTT moments & some frustrations with the plotting.

3D HFR + ATMOS at The Embassy - highly recommended.

Fury was ok - I like WW2 movies but tank combat is a tad unexciting

Gone Girl - liked it

Snowpiercer - liked it but you really, really need to ignore the premise (last surviving humans on a train that doesn't stop) as well as the plot holes

Grown Ups 2 - Adam Sandler movie - with David Spade, Kevin James, Chris Tucker. Need I say more? Kids liked it

Solaris (1972). It's hailed as a classic and I've been meaning to watch it for years. Not particularly impressed.

Boyhood 9/10

I enjoyed how they merged the time lapses, you just had to keep an eye out for the change in hairstyles to realise how many years at passed.

Went back to a couple of old favourites to celebrate getting a big TV.

Fist Full of Dollars — much shorter than I remember it, and the plot feels a bit clumsy now, but totally made by the music.

Once Upon a Time in the West — This stands the test of time much better that FFoD IMO. Has some stand out classic moments like the long crane scene where Claudia Cardinale walks through the station. Henry Fonda makes a great baddy wit those intense eyes. Like FFoD lifted by the music. I watched the remastered version, which had surprisingly good image quality.

Three Days of the Condor — One of my all time favourite movies. Acted beautifully by all characters, but it shows its age with OTT dialog.

More recent films watched on the new TV:

Guardians of the Galaxy — I was so expecting this to be a for kids movie, but I absolutely loved it. I'll definitely watch it again some time.

Shooter — not that recent at 2007, and felt like an older film from its production values, but still enjoyable.
