freitasm: Yesterday I left my wallet at home. Wanted to pay with my phone and seeing the Paywave logo on the terminal I asked "Is your contacless working?" and the reply was... "NO".

Why bother?

I had a similar experience...  My wife got a txt from some friends yesterday saying they were in our area and we should meet for coffee. We rushed out of the house and as we got out of the car near the cafe I realised I had left my wallet at home. When I saw the PayWave logo on the EFTPOS terminal I told my wife to go and join our friends and I'd pay using my phone, only to order then find PayWave was not working. I had to slink off to the table to get her to come back and pay, with a queue of irritated looking customers behind me...  Grrr!

I had a similar problem, the PayWave logo was on the keypad but the person in the shop said their terminal was very old and it doesn't support it.  It looked like someone replaced the keypad at some point.

They also said they didn't think they would ever have it as it costs the shop more and their boss wouldn't pay.

It doesn't cost more than using a credit card, surely?

Is signing still an option? might go back to that for small purchases. Read it was supposed to be discontinued but have seen people doing it still.

That was what I thought.  I assumed the cost of a credit card is the same, whether I use chip, swipe or paywave.

Perhaps they were thinking of debit cards.

Could work. Except i have a visa card

Doesn't matter. Visa and Mastercard acceptance are tied at the hilt. You won't get one without the other except in some pretty weird esoteric situations.

Paywave/Paypass transactions don't cost more.

Debit cards cost a lot less. The interchange fees are a fraction of the fees for credit cards.

I thought (based on previous discussions on geekzone) that if I use my Visa Debit card with Paywave it costs the shop more than if I use that same debit card with Chip & Pin and pressing the "Cheque" button on the terminal.

Is this understanding wrong?

It's correct. Paywave is a credit card transaction while "Cheque" is an EFTPOS transaction. Different things.

However there's no difference between Paywave and pressing "Credit" because both are credit card transactions.

Thanks, that is what I thought and also explains why some shops have their equipment setup so you can't use the "Credit" option when you are using a debit card.

Maybe a coincidence or not but I have just lost my credit card. So a bit more than a week after I get Semble organised I get a call from the bank. Apparently someone in the USA is trying to make a purchase using my card details. Obviously not me but that's my card cut up and me without any spending until the new one arrives. So how do these dodgy people get credit card details? I havent bought anything off Amazon in the last few years.

Amazon is probably the safest place to buy anything.

Someone found your card and tried using it online. As simple as that.

Skimming in Albany late last month was a thing too.

Cards really need to stop with the number being put on them.
