Dulouz: You don't see this sort of carry on in Singapore which is also a multicultural society

There's actually a lot of things you don't see in Singapore which do in fact exist there like most places. The multicultural aspect not sure what you mean there.

That kind of schoolkid fight stuff is not new at all and happened long before cell phones. I'm guessing a lot of this stuff starts on social media now and easily escalates when the real people involved bump into each other.

Back in the 70's we had 'rumbles'.

I think the issue now is that where in the 70's and 80's we had fights that would stop when one of the combatants was down or their friends pulled them away or whatever (I know - not in every circumstance), these days it seems like once your opponent is down, it's the norm to then kick and stomp and bludgeon until the memory card is full of good enough footage, or the opponent is completely comatose and covered in blood.

The case of the poor young girl at Maccas is a classic example - if the aggrieved aggressor was a normal and well-adjusted human it wouldn't have happened at all, but if it had happened 20 or 30 years ago two things would have occurred:

1. The incident would have been over after a few slaps or possibly punches were thrown and it would have been more "handbags at dawn" (although still traumatic for the victim)

2. People would have intervened as there wouldn't have been any fear of reprisals or being accused of also assaulting a minor.

Wombat1: Something is seriously wrong with our justice system.

Recent events make this thread more relevant. Today's shooter was on home detention for trying to strangle his partner!!

Also, there is this case...

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/300931432/teen-mob-member-who-broke-into-home-and-sexually-assaulted-pregnant-woman-gets-home-detention

"A teen Mongrel Mob member who broke into the home of a pregnant woman and indecently assaulted her in the bed she was sharing with her child has been sentenced to 12 months home detention.

Napier man Stevie Taunoa, 19, thanked Judge Gordon Matenga after receiving the sentence on Thursday morning then walked from the dock into the police cells and yelled “Cracked it”."

This guy 'cracked' a way to commit sexual offences during a home invasion and get off .... then boasts to the judge and court. Nice work!

And this a couple of weeks back..

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/crime/teen-mongrel-mob-member-involved-in-taranaki-murder-of-rei-marshall-given-home-detention/TVP6PJV2E5A6ZC33EVV633J6L4/

A teen prospect involved in a gang-related murder assured the court he was cutting ties with the Mongrel Mob but after his calls to a jailed gang boss were intercepted, it was discovered he has instead been patched, complete with the gang’s insignia tattooed on his back.

And this one, which is a crime that relates to the topic...

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/retail-crime-almost-400-ram-raids-in-six-months-judge-tells-young-offender-the-public-have-had-enough/L7X4UDED5FB5PD74DEK7NJ5BZU/

Judge Cassidy said the two charges the teen faced carried a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison each.

“Let that sink in. 10 years,” she said. “There was huge damage caused to both properties. Thousands and thousands of dollars that you cannot afford to repay.”

So, the judge threatens this cretin with 20 years in prison, then goes on to give him a bit of home detention and name suppression. What is wrong with this judge?

These are all  serious crimes that warrant prison sentences .  Yet, the judges are using cultural reports as an excuse to avoid sending dangerous criminals to prison.

Nothing in the article indicates that person was in home detention when committing the offense. You're wrong. Stick to the facts, please.

surfisup1000 didn't say that the sex offender was in home detention when he committed the offence. Home detention was mentioned in the articles about the shooter today.

I see, yes. The post says home invasion and I misread that as home detention. Sincere apologies to you both and thank you cshwone for pointing this out.

Today I read about our Minister of Justice crashing into another car, blowing over the limit, and then being arrested.... I'm dumbstruck to say the least. Shockingly bad, and shockingly embarrassing for our country. What a shame. Hopefully Ginny can sort of few things out.

And now we have descended to South Africa style highway carjacking.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/handguns-brandished-at-motorist-while-driving-on-waikato-expressway/OYBTUEBMHRED5O3JYWJVXZUYTM/

This is not the NZ I used to know.
