It was boiled cooled water that I poured into the jug. No sugar at all.

We had our first ant invasion for quite a while the other day - they were also after the boiled water in a jug that was cooling on the bench overnight.
Kitchen was spotless and they hadn't swarmed the rest of the kitchen - just the jug and surrounding area.

Tiny little black ants that were hard to see on the speckly faux-stone bench.

Further to the ant saga. Sugar now in screw top jar no longer in a sugar bowl. No sweet food left out. No sign of any ants at all for quite a while.

Last night I left a tall glass jug of water on the bench with a lid on that has a small pouring opening. The jug was full of drowned ants this morning. Never heard of ants going after water. There were a lot. In the past have only seen a few sporadic travellers.

There must have been something sweet in the water. That is the only reason ants would do that.

They're after the fluoride for their teeth.

Ok so this is annoying... text messages from Te Whatu Ora/ADHB.

And I guess it's from a shortcode too that you have to have a plan that allows sending to inorder to be able to say yes as well?

Googled it and apparently ants do search for water. This is war. Am cleaning all surfaces with vinegar and water to get rid of their pheromone trails. They haven’t found the kettle yet but certainly will be making sure it’s empty each night. What a pain.

Not as depressed as I was. The entire nest will probably come over tonight for the wake. Am planning borax snacks for them.

The apparent complete absence of good-quality metal drawing (rather than woodworking) tools like triangles and protractors.  You've either got flimsy kiddie "geometry sets" at one end and woodworking tools with raised lips for running along the edges of timber at the other, but nothing suitable for putting together try-out diagrams of stuff before building it to allow you to explore various options.

Aliexpress. Its just easier to find stuff there these days, local businesses seem to make an effort to avoid having to do business with you their web sites are just that bad.

I'm depressed that I thought ants preferred sugar to water. All the things I really believed in as a child are under assault. Maybe I should just become a conspiracy theorist. It is all an ant plot to confuse us and put us off our guard. Where is Lady Ardern when we really need her?

Some species go for sugar, some for protein, so it depends on what sort of ants they are.

That's where the kiddies-toy ones came from, I made a point of buying anodised aluminium rather than plastic ones but they're actually stamped alu sheet, maybe 0.6mm.  They're unlikely to survive real-world use for any amount of time.

If you get ants that go for protein, they could be Argentine ants which are hell to get rid of. Had them in our old house, like nothing I have seen before.

Well when I am in LA later this year I have a journey to "The little machine shop" to do some shopping and gets some bit and pieces I want. Its the shipping costs to NZ that kill it , so why I am there and we have 2 extra bags booked for the trip home...

Ah, there's a good point, I'll be in the home of Faber Kastell, Staedtler, and Rotring in a few weeks, they're bound to have something.  I usually have the suitcase full of chocolate for friends and family but I can always make room for a few extra things.

For people wondering why I'm so picky about stuff like this, here's an example:

Substantial aluminium, with grip in the middle for easy holding, bidirectional scale (so you can measure from the left or right), and silicone pads so it doesn't slide around when you're using it.  It's not rocket science to make one of these, but 99.9% of products don't measure up.

The rates year doesn't line up with the tax year. It's not hard to do the manual calculation, just a pain in the butt.
