I watched Foxcatcher the other. It is a very peculiar and eclectic story but great acting and very well written. One of the better dramas that I have seen in the last few months. I'd give it 8/10 stars.

If you intend on watching it don't research the story (it is based on a true story). I looked up the characters on Wikipedia halfway through and it spoiled it for me.

Awesome movie, had some great brutal scenes. Definitely one for the guys, missus didn't enjoy it.

Just watched The Interview and Horrible Bosses 2.

Both were really good and funny. It might be best if you watch Horrible Bosses 1 before Horrible Bosses 2 as the stories do interconnect and is way funnier if you have watched both.

Woah there zkam002!!! You are five numbers short of being able to admit to taking his esteemed nuttiness's image in vain. The bad news is that hit squads are kitting up as we read this ready to extract revenge for his right royal looniness's hurt feelings. The good news is that all the publicity garnered by his ultimate strangeness's executive hacking team means by the time they get to all the people who have see the movie, you'll have long since died of old age.

You can smile at some North Korean Photoshop bloopers while waiting for the hit squad.

The Imitation Game.

Quite a good film - 6.5/10.

I just wish they had focused a bit more on the war, particularly the interesting stuff about Enigma and the impact breaking it had, and a bit less on Alan Turing's personality and sexual preferences. The long introspective sequences and flashbacks got fairly repetitive, predictable and tedious by the end.

The Imitation Game - 8.5/10

First time going back to the movies with my wife since baby was born last year, and we managed to squeeze in an afternoon session of the Imitation Game. This was an excellent film, all the more enjoyable because we visited Bletchley Park in 2012. My wife has read the book it's based on - Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges - and said it was pretty faithful to the source, though a few things were added for dramatic effect (naturally).

I know a little about the Enigma story (more than my sister-in-law, who was there principally for Cumberbatch) and I found it interesting how they chose to portray the codebreaking aspect which, like hacking on film, can be pretty dull if realistically portrayed. Rather than show people staring at pieces of paper, they focussed on the spark of inspiration that comes from chance encounters, the drama of conflict from the military heirarchy who didn't understand the technical aspects (possibly added or enhanced for dramatic purposes).

More interesting though was the emphasis on Alan Turing. I think some people were expecting this to be a film about breaking the Engima encoding machine, but it was always meant to be about the enigma of Turing himself, and this is something that the film does really well. Cumberbatch gives a heartfelt portrayal of a man out of place, struggling with people who don't understand him. When I saw the trailer I worried that they had created a female love interest to distract away from his homosexuality, but in the film it is quite different - Keira Knightley does a good job of highlighting the confusion in Turing's life, and isn't a love interest so much as a foil to his stuttering emotions.

A worthy contender for the awards season.

I was particularly impressed by the actor who played the awkward teenage Turing rather than cumberbatch himself although he was good for me there was a bit of Sherlock Homes in performance.

Kingsman: The Secret Service - 8/10

When I saw the trailer for this a while back, I picked up a kid's movie vibe. I couldn't really put my finger on why - perhaps it was the motif of young people recruited by the old hands to join a secret organisation - so I was hesitant about watching the film. But when the opportunity arose to go to the movies on Sunday afternoon, it was the only film available that appealed. When buying tickest from the kiosk I was a little bemused that it was rated R16. 5 minutes into the film I realised why...

Turns out it's directed by Matthew Vaughn from a screenplay that adapts Mark Millar's comic The Secret Service. I know precisely nothing about the comic, but I know Vaughn and Millar as the duo responsible for Kick Ass. Which means ultra-violence, swearing, and intense action scenes. Which I am totally fine with. Plus there is something very refreshing about watching Colin Firth demolishing a bar full of meatheads with little more than an umbrella.

Plot-wise, it revolves around Eggsy, an off-the-rails under-achiever whose father was a member of the secret independent intelligence organisation known as Kingsman. After he gets arrested, he is approached by Harry Hart (Colin Firth) to join Kingsman. The first half of the film is mostly about Eggsy's initiation/interview for Kingsman, alongside other potential recruits. The usual "training montage" is interspersed with plot development about the movie's "villain", setting up the final conflict.

What I found really enjoyable about the film was how enjoyable it was. It's a fun movie, deliberately setting up the contrast with "serious" or "dark" superhero and spy films. While I enjoy those films (love the Nolan Batman series, big fan of Craig's Bond), sometimes it's nice to just be entertained by ludicrous, over-the-top action and violence. In parts, Kingsman is a homage to the Bond films of the 1970s, which is no bad thing - taking the best bits from the Roger Moore era, without the reliance on creepy double-entendres. There are fun gadgets, an equivalent "M" (Michael Caine) and "Q" (Mark Strong) - all things which feel comfortable and familiar, without feeling like a rip-off.

Overall, a lot of fun.

John Wick - 7.5/10 - Very good for what it was, which is a straight action/revenge movie.

Snowpiercer - 7/10 - Suspend your disbelief to get past a premise that doesn't really make sense and it's still very watchable scifi/action. **SPOILER START** It looked like they were going to go with a much darker ending, but copped out at the last minute. **SPOILER END**

Gone Girl - 7/10 - Quite different to what I was expecting. For me it had been hyped a bit much, so perhaps was slightly disappointed. Still a good movie.

I remember seeing a bit of this somewhere, can't remember where - just bits here and there. All I could remember was the "W" logo, it made me feel like Wordpress was taking over the world or some such, not knowing the full story of course

It was a last minute light hearted pick and it was excellent. We laughed and laughed out loud and before we knew it 2 hours had passed. I think the gf enjoyed it more than I did which is saying something for an action comedy.

Kingsman looks a bit naff as a concept, (Austin Powers has left me cynical with less than totally serious spy type movies)) but the trailer looks awesome. Definitely on my 'to watch' list.
