Sound City - great doco by Dave Grohl.

I have to say that there's a particular sadness in the eyes of Rick Springfield when he's talking about the days in Sound City.

Great soundtrack too.

I've watched this several times now and it just doesn't get old.

Charlie Wilson's War... on the recommendation of our BDFL

Absolutely brilliant. I was a bit confused before it started. How can you make a movie about congressmen and Afghanistan funny?
Philip Seymour Hoffman is amazing and Tom Hanks, well, what can you say. Fantastic as usual.

Demolition Man, an old favorite from back in the 90s, which just re-ran on Sky. I used to love that film back in the day.

All good until the dinner scene, where the references to Taco Bell that I remembered were crudely (and very, very badly) overdubbed with references to Pizza Hut instead. The lips still say Taco Bell, but the audio doesn't. Which I found very jarring and distracting, particularly as I remembered the original so fondly.

Maybe Pizza Hut paid Sky?

+1 for the Kingsman. It was completely different to my expectations and was such a fun movie. 8.5/10

I also watched this weekend the 1980s movie 'The last Starfighter' it was the first movie I was given on VHS as a kid so got multiple viewings when I was a young fella so it was great to relive it on 1080p quite a few years later.

The Wolf of Wall Street - 6/10

Had a sick day yesterday, so I caught up on a film I'd been meaning to watch for a while now. While it wasn't a bad film, I found it excessively long, and for no good reason. 3 hours puts a film into "epic" and "saga" territory, which I would be hard-pressed to describe this film as. The story, while interesting, could have been substantially tighter if about 30-40 minutes had been left on the cutting room floor. I couldn't think of anything in the second-half of the film that was so essential as to justify 180 minutes of running time.

As the lead character Jordan Belfort, Leonardo DiCaprio does a pretty good job. Jonah Hill, however, just annoyed me as Belfort's sidekick and protege. None of the other characters really stood out for me (that might be the heavy dose of anaesthetic I was under). The story boils down to one of an orgy of sex, drugs and money. However, the films seems to swing between glorifying the lifestyle portrayed by Belfort and condemning him for his excess and lack of morals. Despite the long running time, the last 20 minutes of the film feel rushed, and the conclusion is something of a fizzer.

I'm glad I watched it, but it's definitely not one I'd re-watch (a bit like the other Scorsese/DiCaprio collaboration The Departed - which I also enjoyed, but haven't ever felt compelled to re-watch)

Book of Life was thoroughly enjoyed by people from age 5 to 42 recently. It is a visual masterpiece with several layers of storyline. The kids and I wish to watch it again. 9/10.

I saw most of it today. Imax 3d. 6/10. Ok but story never grabs 100%. Good fx. Something else coming up so decided leaving with 20 minutes left on the clock was a good option instead of breaking a sweat for it.

Jupiter Ascending - 4/10

Unfortunately the special effects don't quite hide the poor storyline, script and performances. I don't expect too much from Tatum Channing and Mila Kunis but I was almost cringing at Eddie Redmayne's character/performance. The distant unempathetic villain thing just wasn't working with the jaded voice.

The Interview - 7/10

I'm not a fan of either Seth Rogen and James Franco films but I found thought this was a really good movie. Its a cheap and easy laughs movie with better than expected acting. Was pleasantly surprised.

Was a good movie, lots of great fights and special effects, but a little corny for my liking. Sometimes corny is good, but it didn't really gel for me.

Sounds like worse than 6/10 if you walk out of a movie you've paid to see.

5 = average.
6 = slightly above average.

I will eventually watch again so maybe a 6.25. It is nowhere near as bad as the prereviews indicate so I was pleasantly surprised for the most part. Any SciFi fan will enjoy it if not expecting a Matrix.

John Wick. Blood from start to end, but for action movie fans a pretty good pick. Some interesting "creations" such as the hotel rules and the gold coins. I even thought it would be based on a comics book, but it's actually an original.

Give it 7.5/10.
