The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. 7/10.

Whimsical light comedy. I actually thought it was slightly better than the first one, which was a pleasant surprise as often sequels fall a bit short of the original. Not a great film, but a good one, with a great cast and eminently watchable. A good choice if you are looking for a light comedy that's good for a bit of a laugh, and a nice option to take the Wife/GF to. Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and Bill Nighy were as good as always, and Richard Gere was a nice addition.

Watched Zoolander last night, just because it was free on Netflix. Still a good 6.5/10 but some good laughs.

Can't say the same about Dumb and Dumber To. Watched it on the plane (QANTAS movie selection WLG - SYD - WLG is appaling) and at the end saw the credits showing SIX WRITERS for this movie. I can't believe they need six people to write this piece of crap. 3/10.

Watched Lucy, free on Chromecast Offers. A real Luc Besson movie, interesting premise, give it a 7/10.

Watched Rover this weekend and found it to be a lot more entertaining and 'real' than John Wick. 7.5.

Interesting to watch them back to back if you have the luxury of time to see how a story can be different even when it's not that much.

I won't say more for fear of ruining the joy.

I saw the trailer for this back in 2014, but only just got around to watching it on Blu Ray this weekend. The trailer made it look really cool, but I have to say that the best bits of its 90 mins are probably contained in the trailer. It's an interesting idea for a film - drug enables "access" to 100% of your brain - but I couldn't shake the feeling that Limitless had explored some of the same territory. Morgan Freeman appears as a professor to explain that we only use about 10% of our brain's capacity (which I understand from QI is actually now an urban myth, and not supported by science), and it's this idea which forms the film's central conceit - that if we can access even just a little bit more (say 20%) then we can start to fully "control" our own bodies, which supposedly leads to telekinesis and other cool powers. It sounds like a really cool idea, but sadly I didn't feel like the film did the concept justice.

Firstly, the film didn't really develop any of the characters. I normally like Scarlett Johansson a lot, but here she didn't really seem to be invested in her character, and so neither did I. Other than her and Morgan Freeman we don't really spend enough time with any other character to get invested in them, and so the film just falls a bit flat.

Secondly, the pacing is a bit weird. The film opens by just dropping a couple of characters into a situation, with no backstory or context. Then it sets off on its journey, which lurches forward in fits and starts. It's on the short side for a feature, but it felt simultaneously too short and too long.

Finally, the film inserts images to metaphorically reinforce the message being conveyed by the characters' dialogue. However, it feels a bit hamfisted and any subtlety is lost. It's almost like the director doesn't think the audience will work it out, and is trying to hold our hands through the "tricky" concepts.

I think my wife summed it up best: it's an okay film, but I don't feel compelled to ever watch it again.

I also watched this a few days back and would agree 100% with it adding that it also got a little predictable towards the end though.

I watched dumplings, a Chinese movie that's a psychological horror about dumplings made of aborted foetuses.

I think it was pretty good and poigniant once you get past the fetus eating part. a bit of a social commentary too on how far women will go for beauty and the pressures of women to keep looking young.

Watched The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies last night. I am glad I waited until available for rental on Amazon Instant Video. What a disappointing ending of a series. Bad acting, bad screenwriting. Give it a 6/10.
