Handle9: Ugh it’s just one thing after another (cars, house maintenance problems etc) at the moment burning cash. It’s not the end of the world just a bit frustrating.

Unfortunately from my experience.....it all happens at the same time! (Then thankfully usually a lull in the expenses for a period)

eg: fridge and oven die in the same month as the car service.

We're fortunate enough that it's money we can afford but it's annoying.

I saved up a sizeable amount for a rainy day, from the highest-paid job I had to date. Now that the job's fixed-term contract has expired, after a brief extension, the rainy day has come. Aside from my car's WOF, I've kept most of my expenses to a minimum.

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

Two annoys for the price of one, the first being that most countries on earth with the notable exception of the richest and most powerful one seem to manage this without any problems:

The second one being that every single time I go through this airport the exact same bag that passes through every other airport without any problems gets picked up for some reason and completely pulled apart by the security people.  Every.  Single. Time.  And all the carefully-packed camera gear is, due to weight distribution factors, right at the bottom.

Sometimes it just keeps on happening for an extended period - it is what it is.

We burned through all of our savings with things like roof/gutter/bathroom etc, while we were also lucky enough that the insurance covered the other $150k worth of work that needed doing - so if we want to look on the positive side, we can safely say that while the last 2 1/2 years have been quite stressful and we no longer have a decent nestegg, we do have a fully renovated home, which we only had to pay a relatively small percentage towards (renovation-wise).

But of course, then the wife's car failed its WOF on a couple of under-body issues ($$$) and the decks need repainting and potentially replacing, but you take what you get in this life - there are people far worse off than us.

At least we have a home and cars and bikes and heating and a working bathroom and kitchen etc.

I too have a wheelie carry-on bag that kept getting pushed into the inspection lane at Auckland Airport security. One day the officer suggested why. My kindle eBook reader is always in there. Its presence caused the extra inspection. Now I always take it out and put it in the tray. Hasn't been pulled for inspection since.

It could be your camera gear is triggering the extra inspection.

Facebook advertising "standards". I don't use it much but there was a bogus ad in my feed, something like "The truth about Clarke Gayford / Sad news for The New Zealand" made up to look like a Herald article. So I report it and:

"We didn't remove the ad
To keep our review process as fair as possible, we use the same Advertising Standards to review reports.
We've taken a look and found that this ad doesn't go against our Advertising Standards.
As you reported it, we won't show this ad to you again. You can also influence the ads that you see by hiding ads or changing your ad preferences.
If you disagree with the decision to not take the ad down, you can request a review."

What a joke. Sad news for THE New Zealand indeed 😄

Facebook's "standards" are non-existent.

I have had the same copy/paste reply whenever I have reported a fake profile, a scam, false advertising, a clear breach of their "standards"...I have given up trying.

One thing about standards is that everyone has them, but they are all different! :)

I, too, reported those ads - I got a heap of them last week. Not sure why.

They annoyed me as usually the people that post/repost/share these things are the same ones that think Mrs Obama isn't a Mrs. and Joe Biden is the Lizard king.

I got the same response from Facebook, but I haven't seen one since.

Facebook has no standards. If they were serious about misinformation and disinformation they would start by not accepting these fake ads that pretend to be a real news outlet or a famous person.

They know it's always a scam but they just want the money.

You should not use Facebook.

Ad blockers don't seem to actually block ads on Facebook. But they do everywhere else.

Have you added Geekzone to the Allow list?

My "something small that annoy me" today is people using ad blockers and not allowing those on sites they use and not there to rip them off, like Facebook.

Ad blocker is off for Geekzone for me. However I did get a small annoyance the other day by ads that took focus from the reply box.  So every few words I had to go and click back into the box to type again.  Thankfully don't see those sorts of ads often.

Can't recall what they were advertising.

Thanks for not blocking our ads.

I've noticed that behaviour a couple of times, the ad at the bottom may cover the reply box, stealing the focus when it refreshes.

One way around it is to scroll the page a bit so the box is above the ad. Also note the full reply page doesn't have any ads.
