Chappie. Definately Neill Blomcamp's weakest film so far. It had some good moments, but overall I was expecting better from the same guy who did District 9.

Furious 7. A good way to wrap up and recap the whole franchise, all the elements you expect from the movie, over the top stunts, fast cars, girls, Vin Diesel and "The Rock".

If all the stunts were completely real thou, I thought the characters all would have died at least twice during the movie, and probably a lot of things still to see on a second viewing.

7.5/10

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

A Million Ways to Die in The West (a 15th viewing).

Yet again, I am struck by the sheer absurdity of this movie.

Classic one-liners, hilarious moments of "insightful" commentary on the horrors of living in the Wild West and some terrible flat spots that aren't remotely funny...even to me.

Overall, I still enjoy this movie. There are times when I think the actors are having so much fun that they are simply ad-libbing and giggling off-script, but to be honest, it's simply a classic Seth MacFarlane movie.

My favourite line? "Y'know, supposedly there's some guy in Texas who smiled one time when he was getting his picture taken..."

After Earth (AE). 7/10.

I avoided because of bad reviews but good solid sci fi movie. Looks like pretty bad acting by Jayden in the beginning but get past that and the faux southern bad accent attempts by everyone throughout the movie and its good. Story by Will Smith.

Edit: yeah I rent stuff after I see it advertised on FTA TV ; ).

it's not awesome, but it's not incredibly bad either...it's just...watchable.

For me it reaches watch again status easily. The acting could have been tighter but the excellent set and conceptual design and the classic style story (and lack of holes) easily overcome the minor issues.

Foxcatcher - 7.0

I watched this with two mates who like fast moving action flicks so they did not enjoy what I found to be a thinking mans movie. It was well made and left a lot of room for thought without deviating too far from the actual story. Wikipedia have a good write up that compares the movie to the real life events it is based on and unfortunately the article details the movie, so avoid that until after you've seen this. I liked it though and I immediately commented to my mates that it was like watching a crime drama where you get to decide who is guilty or who is gaming the system because only the known indisputable facts are given and the gaps or holes are deliberately not filled. This isn't for everybody and you gonna have to watch it with your brain in gear. Also great to see some names in out of typical roles.

I was dragged to see Insurgent at the weekend.

That is 119 minutes of my life I won't get back. Truly one of the most awful films ever made.

Watched Expendables 3 last week.

Thoroughly enjoyable 80's action. Weird that it wasn't made in the 80's.

Terribly acted at times and the violence is gratuitous. Character development was nil and the plot is so full of holes that you could easily get lost trying to fill them, but all in all, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (6/10)

Not bad, but I watched it in stages while I was sick, so that might explain why it felt a bit disjointed for me. However, it didn't resonate with me as much as the first film. The themes of tolerance and escalating conflict didn't really have the same impact as the more personal first film. There were some good moments though that illustrated the depth of the ape's intelligence, when one of the apes plays on the prejudices of the humans to gain the upper hand. The clincher for me was a failure to feel any kind of empathy for the major characters. Overall, not a bad film but not really a great sequel.

Need for Speed (5/10)

I always wondered why they didn't make a NFS film sooner, or why they didn't just brand the Fast and the Furious film as a NFS film. After watching Need For Speed, I understood - the stories don't match. Though I've only played a few NFS games, the film is broadly faithful to the common NFS storyline (I suppose), but it felt far less engaging than any of the F&F storylines. I've never been a fan of Aaron Paul, and this didn't do much to change my opinion. The cars were nice, the driving was cool, and the stunts okay, but I didn't find much to get excited about.

What We Do in the Shadows (7/10)

This was okay, but not laugh-out-loud funny. More smirk-quietly-to-yourself. The running time counted against it as a film where most of the best bits were already in the trailer. Taika Waititi did a good job of the vampire-as-pedantic-flatmate, and Jermaine Clement's vampire was pretty good too. However Rhys Darby's werewolf somewhat stole the show for me.

Fast and Furious 7 - 7.5/10

I've seen all the F&F films (even 2 Fast 2 Furious), and I've rewatched many of them several times over. Fast 5 did a really good job of rescuing the franchise from the marginal effort that was Fast 4, and Fast 6 improved on that formula. One of the best bits of Fast 6 was the post-credits setup for Furious 7, which promised to wrap-up the overhang from Tokyo Drift. So I was amped to see Furious 7.

For the most part it keep it's promise, though in hindsight I wish I'd never watched any of the trailers. The best action sequences were flagged in the trailers, and would have been far more impressive if I had gone in completely cold (though they were still mighty impressive). What I liked about it, though, was how it chose to start the film - not with a major action sequence, but a neat piece of character development for the main villain Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). However, as good as it was, I felt that his character development stalled at that point and he became as much a macguffin as the central part of the plot - the retrieval of the "God's Eye" hack which enables the user to access all network-connected microphones and cameras to track anyone on the planet. Both Shaw and the God's Eye serve little purpose but to provide several opportunities for Toretto and crew to traipse around the world in cool cars and fight/drive/blow stuff up. I know that's pretty much the plot of all the previous films, but it felt a little more bald this time around.

The elephant in the room is the death of Paul Walker, and I had heard that they had dealt with it respectfully in the film. I had some ideas how they might do it, but what they came up with was pretty good, and not quite what I was expecting. The only problem was that because I knew he had died during filming I spent most of the time watching his scenes to spot the replacements/CGI work. In general, it worked really well and I couldn't spot any glaring stand-ins.

Just finished watching Predestination.

Odd. Mind-bending. Strangely compelling.

I actually really enjoyed it, despite the lack of anything really happening in this film.

I'd give it a solid 7.5/10

I didn't enjoy Divergent, so I won't be shelling out cash to watch this sequel.

The Maze 6.5/10

Excellent cinema excellent pace very watchable and good story plot but a weak obvious part 2 and part 3 are coming ending.

Dark Horse 7/10

Guy living on the edge after leaving a mental hospital and living in a gang environment with his Gisborne family helps with chess club. Excellent. Never a dull moment. 'Based' on a true story.

The Age of Adaline 8/10.

Really enjoyed this one last night. A very good date night movie. Very predictable so do not watch the trailer or read anything and it will entertain. If you are heading out to a movie in Auckland CBD I highly recommend checking out Bonz Cajun Kitchen at Elliott Stables for some great ribs and sliders. Made the movie night extra good.
