It's been a while since we've had a good rant about language. Herewith a couple of my little annoyances.
Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

- When people say "adverse" and they actually mean "averse".
- When people say "without further adieu" and they actually mean "without further ado".
And people who say "refute" when they mean "deny"
And people who say 'either' when they mean 'both' - as in "There was a policeman at either end of the bridge".
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
I could care less about those arguments.
(I really could!)

Seen what you done there.

Or "boo" instead of "beau".

... unless they've already said goodbye and don't like prolonged farewells. I don't. π

A former schoolteacher mate of mine hates it when people misuse 'less than' and 'fewer than'. I'm a raging pedant but that's one thing I don't understand and can never remember. Apparently I always get it wrong. I'd like to do it on purpose just to wind him up but I don't know enough to even do that.

It's all about tangible amounts, e.g.
"You're getting a bit of a belly there, you should drink less beer." vs
"After the celebration there were fewer bottles left in the crate."

Many thanks but I still think I will never quickly remember all that in social intercourse.

There's always a bit of interpretation in this though. My pre-teen asked why rice wasn't really considered countable. And then started counting to prove his point...

Surely he meant rice grains? π

Speaking of language irritations.
Why do we have different words when the quantity is smaller, i.e. 'less' vs 'fewer', but not when the quantity is larger, i.e. 'more'?
