floydbloke:

Why do we have different words when the quantity is smaller, i.e. 'less' vs 'fewer', but not when the quantity is larger, i.e. 'more'?

Wait, isn't "morer" a word?

If it is, it’s not as gooder as ‘morest’.

A former schoolteacher mate of mine hates it when people misuse 'less than' and 'fewer than'. I'm a raging pedant but that's one thing I don't understand and can never remember. Apparently I always get it wrong. I'd like to do it on purpose just to wind him up but I don't know enough to even do that.

It's all about tangible amounts, e.g.

"You're getting a bit of a belly there, you should drink less beer." vs

"After the celebration there were fewer bottles left in the crate."

Its not a good example as beer describes both a liquid, as well as an item that you can have one of, since it is accepted to say you will go and have "a beer" with mates. So in normal use you can say that you should have 'less beers' and still make sense.

Cars vs traffic is a better example. Less traffic, fewer cars. Cant have a traffic.

Surely he meant rice grains? 😜

If you can count them, use fewer.

Less beer but fewer bottles.

It can be fun teasing pedants. I have an acquaintance who corrects people when they say 'soccer' - no, it's football. I hardly ever say soccer except when I see that person when I say it all the time :-)

Oh, that's easy, just turn it on its head. Whenever you get to a point in a conversation where you'd use one of those two, stop, pull out your phone, spend ages googling it while they wait for the conversation to continue, then use the appropriate term and continue.

Yes. Years ago a mate and I were on a long-distance train going through Arizona. There was an older woman passenger earwigging on our conversation - we know Americans can be somewhat fascinated by the Kiwi accent because it sticks out like dogs’ proverbials.

At one point my mate asked me what is the next stop. I couldn’t resist it, looked at the map and deliberately mispronounced it as ‘Tuck-son’. We hadn’t been talking to her but she couldn’t resist it either and said ‘It’s ‘Too-son’. I smiled and said Yeah, I know.

She laughed when she realised I was winding her up and then we had a good old chat.

Whoa. This thread is going on since 2016. And the top discussions from that year are still very active:

That Trump thread is wrongly categorized - should be part of this Annoys thread.

People who pronounce the T in Often. It's silent. I know it's now considered 'correct' if you prounce the t but it sounds awful.

Well of course if you pronounce it of-awful-en.  That's just weird.  ;-)
