My FnP top loader washing machine.. seems incapable any more of getting through a wash cycle without having an out of balance fit at 30 minutes and 13 minutes to go.

I can't remember how old it is, maybe closer to 10y than 5y. It still has the protective film over the buttons though.

Check the balance ring is not broken or lose or empty of water and the suspension springs are intact . The balance ring is a plastic doughnut on the top edge of the bowl with water inside that should redistribute itself to balance the bowl. There should be 4 springs from the cabinet top corners that should keep the whole thing centered. It's a very simple and clever design with not much to go wrong with it.

invisibleman18: Waking up this morning to a notification from Air Bnb that our booking for the Coldplay concert in Auckland in a few weeks is canceled. No reason, just "your reservation is canceled." Presumably so they can 5 times the price and try and get someone who is still desperate a few weeks before. The concerts went on sale last November and we booked the accommodation in February so you'd have thought the event was known about and higher pricing was factored in at the time (it wasn't exactly cheap for where it is).

Just another reason not to use Air Bnb. We used them many times over the past eight years but stopped three years ago after various bad experiences. And that's not counting the cost and cleaning fees etc.

You are unlikely to get canceled like that by a hotel or motel.

I've used them a lot in NZ and overseas too (in USA) and this is the first time I've had one cancel like this. I've had it happen with a motel too when I booked one in Napier for the Mission Estate concert, only to then see it still available at multiple times the price after they cancelled. That time worked out as we had friends to stay with - we initially thought they were going to have family staying with them.

FWIW, if you need them, F&P service are brilliant to deal with - as reported here - and IMO their prices are pretty reasonable.

This should be contestable.
I can't believe they can just cancel without a genuine reason. "I could get more money" isn't a valid reason, if that is actually the case.
Much like Uber can cancel when they are metres from you...often because a better fare has come along.

Yeah it should be. I sent a message asking why it's canceled so close to the time after it was confirmed and paid for in February but no reply yet. Also tried Air BnB live chat but they weren't much use. Could only say "the host has canceled and you will be refunded" but they have given $25 credit towards a new booking.

As I said, the concert was on sale last November and we booked it in February so they would have known about the event and being able to charge more at the time. It's not something that's suddenly come up as a surprise a month before the date.

Stink.
I hope you find something suitable and priced well. Enjoy the concert!

If i wibble the drum when empty, it always centers itself so I presume the balance ring is working. Often multiple out of balance fits occur during a cycle, i counted 16 one annoying day. Full half or mostly empty loads, makes no difference.

I will have to bite the bullet and ring someone. I just dont want the local guy coming out, he does my head in.

I have no idea why they persisted with the 50fps nonsense when they went to digital, since anything digital can do 60 and 24.

A lot of TVs will go blank or flicker for a few seconds when the mode changes, and they probably decided that this wasn't a good experience (and it would probably annoy the advertisers if their ad is at a different frame rate to the one before it - the broadcasters could standardise the advertising frame rate but there would still be a flicker when e.g. switching out of a movie).

That suggests the suspension springs are intact but not necessarily the balance ring which works when the drum is spinning fast. General wash loads should stay balanced but if you wash a single large thing like a beach towel they will tend to get out of balance until you manually re-arrange them.

If you are in Auckland F&P will send one of their staff technicians to you and you can ask to get someone specific or avoid someone if you wish. Outside of Auckland they use third party contractors so there's less flexibility.

cddt: See https://askubuntu.com/questions/1463463/how-to-stop-and-disable-cups-service-in-ubuntu-22-04

Sure, you can find dozens of Google hits for how to get rid of it, none of which actually work, it just keeps coming back.  See the very next reply in the thread:

You cannot prevent snap cups from reinstalling itself after every reboot or snap refresh.

[...]

You can stop, disable and remove cups ad nauseum and it will always come back after a reboot.

In the end I seem to have stopped it by removing as much as possible with both apt, snap, and rm -f, and then adding a pin to disable reinstall.

Skype on a ship. Signed me out as they thought it was suspicious. Ask me to sign in with my full email and password. Tick. Then it says to type in the code they sent. Go to my email, it’s blocked because of a suspicious sign in, meaning Skype I presume. So now can’t get into either Skype or email. There is an option to prove another way….which takes you back to the beginning.

Need Skype as that’s what our friends in Beirut have and things getting worse there.

It gives the option to reset the password but the outlook address is what I sign into my iPad with and am to scared to try that route while away in case I end up getting locked out of the iPad if it doesn’t work. Infuriating.

Do you happen to know the model of it?

Ours would do the same things + it started to drip slowly when not in use, so I ordered some new parts from fisher'n'paykel and installed them myself, and it was as good as new again. Cost a couple of hundred and was pretty easy to install myself + there were a couple of youtube videos thats helped.

The cost of pet ownership.

Dog pulled up lame the other night and after a couple of days of waiting to see if he'd improve, we decided to go to the vet.

He's done his second cruciate ligament (other side) in 5 years. He's a little dog and quite active for a 12 year old, so needs both legs, really.

It'll be $6500 to have the surgery done.

But we have to have a scan done on his heart in the next couple of days, because he has a heart murmur and they want to make sure he's all good for the surgery. That's another $600.
Today's consultation cost us $130.

So that'll be $7k+ in a matter of a couple of weeks.

Thankfully we can claim 80% of that back via pet insurance, but we still have to find the cash first. Not ideal. Not ideal at all.

The best mayonnaise, hard to get at my local supermarket, and this person has a whole suitcase of it!
