kiwifidget: The best mayonnaise, hard to get at my local supermarket, and this person has a whole suitcase of it!
Did the police check her house for the stolen paddling pool to go with it?
What, was she also getting a blow-up Titanic and loading it up with mayonnaise to recreate Sinko de Mayo?

invisibleman18: Waking up this morning to a notification from Air Bnb that our booking for the Coldplay concert in Auckland in a few weeks is canceled. No reason, just "your reservation is canceled." Presumably so they can 5 times the price and try and get someone who is still desperate a few weeks before. The concerts went on sale last November and we booked the accommodation in February so you'd have thought the event was known about and higher pricing was factored in at the time (it wasn't exactly cheap for where it is).
Just another reason not to use Air Bnb. We used them many times over the past eight years but stopped three years ago after various bad experiences. And that's not counting the cost and cleaning fees etc.
You are unlikely to get canceled like that by a hotel or motel.
AirBnB & Uber etc are really just exploitative rent-seeking outlets masquerading as innovators.
"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover
"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

Yup, their "innovation" is figuring out how to bypass the various regulations that were put in place to try and prevent abusive behaviour like this.

Recency bias is a powerful thing.
AirBnb and Uber in particular have changed their industries profoundly, mostly for the better. Taxis used to be a regulated license to print money, which in some cities were run by borderline criminal cartels. Uber has added a massive amount of value for consumers and caused much needed change and improvement in service.
Uber's also a fairly awful company run by some horrible people but they have caused much needed innovation in that space.

A little tortuous - but not bad! 😀
BTW Titanic didn't blow-up - IIRC it fell off its foils and capsized.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

It's a good thing we didn't have social media back then or we'd have found out that the iceberg was a false flag operation by radical-left neo-nazi Democrats and the sinking was a controlled demolition funded by George Soros.

Are you trying to tell me it isn't?

elpenguino: Planned outage: Our Canterbury radar will be offline Mon 23 Sept and Tue 24 Sept from 7:30am-5pm for planned work. Nearby radars will provide partial coverage, but detection will be significantly reduced for Canterbury.
I see the Canterbury Weather Radar is now down until December for replacement of the building and equipment.
From: https://about.metservice.com/our-company/national-weather-services/canterbury-radar-/
From Sunday 29 September 2024, the Canterbury Weather Radar will be undergoing replacement. To allow for this work, the radar is scheduled to be offline for two and a half to three months.

Stink.
I hope you find something suitable and priced well. Enjoy the concert!
Thanks. Managed to book something else, cheaper and nicer looking than the original so hopefully it's worked out for the best. No reply from the original as to why the sudden cancellation so don't expect they will bother, but it makes no difference anyway so just move on.

OTOH a lot of theorists seem to think that Titanic sank after hitting a lettuce but IMO that's probably unlikely.

Not small, but annoying and expensive. Our hot water cylinder burst last night. (After 11 years, doesn't seem particularly durable for a 'permanent' fixture like that.)
On the plus-side:
Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

On the plus-side:
- we caught it early, no flooding
- plumber can come late afternoon today to assess and should be able to replace tomorrow
Not repairable?

I'm no expert but it's leaking through the top so I suspect it has rusted through like the last one did.
Doing a bit of research, I found out about an anode rod that you can replace every five or so years to prevent this. I'll ask the plumber about this. Seems it's basically a sacrificial rust-decoy that attracts minerals and sh*t to it, rather then attacking the steel of the cylinder itself. Although there's nothing in the Rheem manual that mentions it.
Edit: Hang fire. The installation manual says it has a protective anode. Wish I'd known about this earlier.

Older HWC's have the inner vessel made out of copper - if you ever see one in a skip you can cut off the outer galv cover and the mucky insulation and save the copper inner to repurpose into something interesting.
