My Turkey

Sometimes one feels a need to offer an explanation that no-one is asking for. This is one of those times.

Several years ago I became fascinated with the feral turkeys that occasionally wandered across our property. I learned how they communicated and behaved, and eventually I managed to trap and (re-)domesticate a few. At the time I was acting as a surrogate parent for two young girls and we used to chase the turkeys through the surrounding hills. The girls became quite good at catching them.

We raised a number of chicks and several turkeys became pets. As with anything, there is a lot more to turkeys than you think if you are willing to take the trouble to look.

I had several favourite turkeys. One, a massive, magnificent gobbler, was named Buttons. He started out as a tiny, yellow chick. That caught my eye because most chicks are brownish-grey.

Buttons grew into an impressive adult male. In the turkey world, males are significantly less intelligent than females. Hens are always brighter, but when they have chicks, their IQ shoots up about 100 points. If you doubt this, just try tracking and catching a female with chicks some time.

Male turkeys are completely confounded by stock fences. Females have no problem with these. A female simply hops over the fence. A male can spend DAYS running up and down the fence, looking for a non-existent gap. I know this to be true because I have seen it many times. It happened to Buttons one day when we went to the beach. He managed to get onto the other side of the fence at the top of the hill. We figured he would work it out and left in the morning. When we got back in the evening, he was still running back and forth, trying to find a gap in the fence. The next morning we took pity on him and opened the gate for him.

The thing about turkeys is that they are perfectly capable of flying, but when they think about it, they can’t work it out. At least the males can’t. Our turkeys often roosted in the trees at night. When dusk came they would fly up to the branches without problem. If you run at a turkey and scare it in front of a fence, it will hop over the fence without thinking. If you approach slowly, it will panic and run back and forth against the fence until you are able to trap it. At least the males will.

Buttons used to hang out on our veranda. He became too big to hop up on a shoulder, like other turkeys did, but he was completely tame. I named him Buttons because he was cute as a button when he was a little yellow chick.

Buttons has been gone for many years now. I chose him as my avatar when I first joined Geekzone as a way of honouring his memory. The other day I finally updated the image. Things change, time moves on. I no longer have any turkeys. Instead, cats have moved onto the property. The captive turkeys are long gone and I no longer encourage others to come around because I don’t want the cats to attack their chicks. I love my cats but I also have fond memories of my turkeys. Anyone who cares about animals will understand this.

This is my final farewell to Buttons. He was a neat turkey and a lot of fun. I’m glad he was part of my life.

I have put more pets in the offal pit than I can count, sheep tend to be very good at dying.

Our dear cat Shadow who was one year and six months old just last Sunday the 8th was hit by a car last evening. We found her body across the road in a neighbour's front yard this afternoon.

Arlo and his sister Shadow were born on 8 Nov 2014, the same day that my old cat Blackie had to be put down.

Blackie, you're going to have some company out in the garden tomorrow. cry

There are some photos of The Shadster earlier in this thread.

RIP little girl; you were a beautiful girl and full of life. We will miss you so very much. Love Stuart and Belinda, Arlo and Noelle.

Our condolences on the sudden loss of the young member of your family @DarthKermit and @MrsDarthKermit

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

So very very sorry to hear of your loss. That is terrible. Utterly gut-wrenching. I have also been through that and there are no words that help. Goodbye sweet Shadow. RIP.

Thanks everyone for your kind words, they do help. It's just so sad, she was very young. This is the first cat I've ever lost to an accident like this. The other three that were in my life all lived to about 15.

MrsDarthKermit has a picture of Arlo and Shadow that I took as her avatar.

Shadow is the black cat. They are from the same litter, hard to believe.

Our dear baby Shadow is now laid to rest, next to her Uncle Blackie in our back garden.

Rest easy and rest forever you two. You were and always will be loved and thought of.

Grief is the price of love.
