What works is finding ways to give people a better life so they have something that matters to them to lose

Absolutely right. If your life is shit, you live in a shit house or a car or under a bridge, eat shit food, have shit friends, and can't see that ever changing, prison really isn't much of a deterrent.

It would be interesting to hear how leader Harry Tam and the rest of the "we're just a bunch of kindly gentle social workers really" Mongrel Mob PR crew try to spin this.

neb: As a rhetorical question, has marijuana prohibition ever prevented one single person from getting it?

I think it deters people who are of a law-abiding mindset.

Alternatively, it creates disrespect/disregard for the law among otherwise law-abiding citizens. In all of the cases where I've experienced marijuana use in public, not one single person batted an eyelid about it. The law was being broken openly and publicly, and everyone ignored it.

Many years ago there was concern that the government was going to pass some really stupid legislation being pushed for by a few pressure groups. Someone who worked for the party then in power told me not to worry about it too much because governments were reluctant to pass laws they knew were unenforceable, and it was for exactly this reason, that creating laws whose main effect was to engender disrespect for the law among otherwise law-abiding citizens was a bad idea.

(Posted here because, despite it being somewhat political, it really is principally a W/T/F).

Ge0rge: And yet everything you've mentioned equally applies to alcohol, which we show time and time again to be an issue. Why is one drug treated any differently to another?

I’m generally in favour of decriminalising drugs but there will be consequences to this. If there is to be a change the benefits should be greater than the cost. Just because one harmful substance that many people enjoy is legal doesn’t necessarily mean that all other harmful substances that many people enjoy should be legalised.

Alcohol is more harmful than marijuana but it is an ingrained part of society and impossible to eliminate. That doesn’t necessarily mean everything else should be legalised too. It should be assessed on an overall impact to society basis rather than a “what about booze” or puritanical moral basis.

I am just lost for words.

Surprised me the shooting part occurred on a main street. Surprised me the police are describing it as a gang conflict related incident. The people in the van were not representing an affiliation in any way at all as I understand it.

They were however targeted because they came from a rival "gang town" and there were some rival gang members in the visiting team (although they were not displaying gang colours or patches).

I am surprised that the police called it gang related as they often seem at pains to avoid saying that.

It's pretty clearly gang related. Whether or not one group were wearing gang colours doesn't mean that it's not gang related.

There has been a change of government.
One could reasonably surmise that members of the police force may be inclined to think that some things that were formerly 'not supposed to be said' are now safe - or even encouraged - to be mentioned. And vice versa, of course.

Police officers do not live in a political vacuum

I didn't want to clutter the "for sale" area, but a genuine whisky tango foxtrot for me was the guy who has lost more on depreciation from owning an EV for one year than I've spent on petrol in the last 10 years.  It was obvious that Mazda were dreaming with the RRP on that model but 50% in 12 months is brutal.

Might actually be a decent purchase at $35k though.

Americans asked "What is an eclipse?"

I believe this man is referring to Gilbert Gottfried, a comedian, who joked about it.

Youtube: Jimmy Kimmel Live
...
"how long do you think the eclipse will last?"

"I think 72 hours 3 days because the reason I think that the solar eclipse may happen for 3 days is because that's what Gilbert told me.

Gilbert was referring to the three days that people are going to have to stay inside there's going to be a lot of crime happening it's going to be a lot of dangerous activities more than what we already experienced

I'm not sure if this violates Godwin's law or not since it's a reference to a company name, but it's a giant W/T/F of a company name.

It‘s a surname.
