MadEngineer: Removal of the clock from Windows 11. You used to be able to click the date/time display in the task bar to get an analog clock but now you only get notifications + a calendar.

Could I recommend 8GadgetPack, which gives you all that and more?  I've currently got a clock/calendar, CPU load and temps, memory use, top processes, network traffic, and a bunch of other stuff all as a sidebar next to my work.

This should be in Smile but I'm going to put it in Annoy because of how long it's taken to finally get this: NZ banks are finally, finally adopting Confirmation of Payee for payments.  If you haven't heard of this before it's the astounding technical breakthrough of checking that the name on the account you're making a payment to is the name you're actually intending to make the payment to rather than a single-digit typo in the number or a phish.

Didn't nearly everywhere else have that decades ago? This is what happens when businesses have a monopoly on something.

The specific CoP technology is relatively new and was introduced to combat APP (authorised push payment) fraud, a lot of which is phishing-based and enabled by the fact that a totally anonymous account number gives you no idea who you're really authorising the payment to go to.  However NZ has lagged years behind other countries, which given that they typically have 800 different banks with vastly different ways of doing things while we have 3 1/2 banks that are more or less indistinguishable is a pretty poor show.

There’s at least one earlier thread here on GZ on this.

Repeatedly being told about features in Chrome, none of which work in NZ. Sigh.

Some dead? Pixels on my phone. My flip is about 18 months old, got fixed under warranty at about 12 months old after the screen stopped working.

I put my phone down about 10pm. Checked the time about 11pm and there is very bright spot about halfway up the phone now 🤦‍♂️

I went to a makeup class and the makeup artist said, I used to be an environmental scientist and now I'm a makeup artist, and then they proceed to tell you unscientific opinions! Like... what happened to the scientist in you!!! They say the expiry date is the little container open on the back of makeup but.... it's just a period of opening date. Like food, it's a best before date, not a use by date. You can totally use makeup a day after "expiry" or a month after etc. It just means the quality will not be as good but.... why doesn't a so called scientist know this or google it? Because she's on the sales promo for Mecca and Nutrimetics <eye roll>. I just wish people could be honest and google stuff instead of going... oh, these people are beginners they know nothing, we'll target them for sales and hope they trust me because I'm a scientist in a former life and now a makeup artist (which has very little science behind it). I do not like so called knowledgeable people trying to take advantage of less knowledgeable people!

Is it another case of what Upton Sinclair said, "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it."?

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

Books that hide references at the back, restarting the numbering in each chapter and arranged by chapter number, when the unnumbered chapters only have names.

I guess it makes it difficult to question anything when you can't find what's being referenced.

It's not that difficult to understand though and she said she was an environmental scientist previously. This is literally stuff you just... google. And when they were pushing Mecca products which are expensive and saying the cheap stuff is no good ... which is BS as loads of beauty influencers agree for example the ELF lip oil beats the Dior lip oil..... its pretty obvious they're being backed by Mecca. Apparently they get a 25% discount if they apply and are successful for that backing. Milani is sold in farmers but their baked blushes are made in Italy! They're great quality. Brand names trade on their names... it doesn't mean they're always better. Surely a scientist can, y'know... google a little? But I'm most angry they target people that haven't googled.

Saw a post here about getting cheap Oral-B replacement heads on AliExpress, so I went there to take a look.  Found a pack of 16 for $1.72NZD.  Figured it might be worth looking around to see what else I could pick up, and found about 4 items that were also cheap but looked like they were worth a punt.  Added them to my cart.  Free shipping.  Go to checkout.  "Sorry, none of your items are available."  Go back to the item listing - 32 in stock.

/facepalm

That's 20 mins I won't get back.  Not gonna spend more time sifting through their website to find the correct combination of items that are actually in stock and at the advertised price.

I've never run into that one before... could be a side-effect of the 11/11 sale with stocks being cleared in the time between adding them to the cart and checking out?

There’s more than a few of those in the Apple world too - although a lot do work eventually. Apple Maps is still hopeless here compared to what they get in the USA.
