Apart from the general ongoing brokenness of TM over the last few weeks there's a new one: Enter "relay module 12v" in "Search all of Trademe", and you only get results from TM Motors.  And there's no escape, no matter what you do you get dropped back in TM Motors, which is the one section of TM I don't want any results from.

Does anyone from TM ever actually try and use their own web site?

That's the app, I'm using the web site.  Tried with three different browsers, same results each time, also just with "relay 12V", and Google gives plenty of hits for that on TM that aren't in TM Motors.

Same here: it switches the search to "Car parts & accessories". I suspect there's some sort of Artificial Idiocy there to make it pick the category automatically.

To quote Raymond Chen, I bet somebody got a really nice bonus for that feature.

As an aside, the stuff that post describes as things that an app should never do is exactly what Windows 10/11 do now, see e.g. the "Bad Balloon" section.

Indeed.

"adding an icon to the notification area that conveys no useful information but merely adds to the clutter", so in other words the one with an Outlook icon with notification text of - and I quote - "Microsoft Outlook".

The AU Bureau of Meteorology website doesn't support HTTPS. In 2025. It wouldn't have been acceptable in 2015!

While I agree that it's annoying (especially since the iOS version of Safari seems to have a bug where it'll try to use HTTPS even though you've explicitly entered http://), what's unacceptable about it? What's secret about weather forecasting data?

It's been doing this for several years. Basically, TradeMe have decided that they know better than you what you are looking for, and make you ciick thorough about 5 more clicks to get it to show all categories. I complained to them several times about this and got nowhere. Found plenty of examples where it makes up entirely the wrong category to go to, and in some cases excluded about 90% of valid results. Unless you are aware of it and override it every time they are the ones missing out on revenue due to people not finding what they are looking for.

Additionally, it now also ignores some single word searches where the result is in the body of the description instead of the title. So if you search for geekzone it will only return results where geekzone is in the title, not the body. This nonsense can at least be overridden by using quotes - "geekzone" will return results with geekzone in the body as well, and it seems less likely to arbitrarily exclude results from categories that you shouldn't be searching in according to TradeMe.

Any party involved can modify an unencrypted page in transit—your ISP, another ISP, a CDN, your work proxy, malware on your router, etc.

You are at greater risk of infecting your computer with malware at that point.

Indeed. I shouldn't be replying at five in the morning when I'm half asleep. I shouldn't even be reading at that hour!

Not mad but rather sad. Quite a sad and terrible way for Gene Hackman and his wife to leave this world.

We now have a car in which the gear selector is a small thumb-operated switch. You push it forward to select reverse and pull it back to select drive - so it mimics older stick-style auto gearbox selectors.

I never thought about it in earlier cars but here it annoys me - surely it would make more sense to push it forward for drive and pull it back for reverse. There’s probably logic for the way it is but it escapes me.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Without being morbid about it I do wonder at some of the details. For example, did Hackman's Alzheimer's trap him in the kitchen? Was he unable to feed himself? Did the dog starve to death? It is a very bizarre situation. I agree it is a sad and terrible way to go for anyone. He certainly didn't deserve that.

To a first-order approximation, the number of web-based malware infections from phishing and compromised web sites is 100%, the number of malware infections from active modification of TCP streams is 0%.

In fact gratuitous use of encryption can actually make things worse since it prevents firewalls and gateways from scanning for malware present on web pages, which is hidden by the use of TLS.
