Watched Maggie in the weekend. It got mixed reviews, but I thought it was pretty good.

Don't expect lots of zombie killing action; rather it is a somber character drama, with a surprisingly good turn from Mr Schwarzenegger.

I watched a few movies last week while sick in bed, but of note was Jupiter Ascending, Dracula Untold and Chappie

Jupiter Ascending: 6/10
Some decent Sci-Fi goodness let down by strange animal-like characters and a bit of a sloppy ending

I've already reviewed Chappie, I think on an earlier page

Dracula Untold: 8/10
I enjoyed it.

Just watched Kingsman. Good fun and exactly what I was looking for after a challenging few days with extended family and sick kids.

Not classy, just fun. 8/10

Went to a preview viewing of Ant-Man last night. I have to say that I had my doubts but once again the team at Marvel have pulled off another wee gem. There seems to be no stopping them at the moment. A great blend of comedy and action. Go see it if you're a fan of the Avengers franchise. 7/10

Caught Ant-Man at the Imax in 3D. Often illogical, but another enjoyable action winner from Marvel. Lots of giggles along the way, and a visual action feast on the big screen in 3D that left a smile on my son's face a mile wide. 7/10. As always with Marvel, watch past the credits. I sense a future for this character if the $$$ pays off.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I saw The Lobster at the film festival.

Not at all what I expected - a weird film with many unexpected twists and turns. Watchable and definitley not Hollywood formulaic, with a fair few funny moments, but probably not for the squeamish.

Managed to watch two movies last week while I was on leave:

Terminator: Genisys 6/10

Not as bad as I had feared, but not as good as I had hoped. A lot of reviews I had read said it was too complicated and jumping around the timestream. I didn't find that at all, and it certainly wasn't any more confusing than BTTF2. Emilia Clarke does a good job, and almost convinces me she is Sarah Connor, but doesn't quite get there. Jai Courtenay as Kyle Reese is...well, not completely awful. At the start of the film it feels very awkward, but it gets a little better towards the end. And Arnie is just Arnie, but a little more self-aware.

As for the story, it wasn't too bad but it felt a little unnecessary. T1 is a fantastic film, and T2 does an excellent job of building on that world. It was a rare type of sequel that didn't feel like it was being made solely to capitalise on a previous success. This one did. If it had just been made as a standalone film, without trying to shoehorn itslef into the existing canon, then it would have been fine. But there are too many forced winks and nods to the previous films for my liking. I was intrigued by the apparent scene for scene re-shoots of key 1984 moments, and it made me want to go back and re-watch the films to see how faithful they were. But just one week later and I've already forgotten 90% of the film.

Ant-Man 3D - 6/10

As a Marvel movie, it comes with a reasonably high chance of success, and it's almost a given that it will be entertaining. However, with so many Marvel and other superhero films out there already, it's getting harder for a film to distinguish itself. These are the hurdles that I think Ant Man faced, and I don't think it overcame them.

I knew nothing about Ant Man before the film was announced (but then I also knew nothing about Iron Man, Captain America, or Thor, yet enjoyed those films immensely) so I went in as a green newbie. I might have got more out of it if I knew more about the backstory - as it stands, though, the film felt odd. The pacing was a little bit off, the hero/villains uninteresting, and while action and VFX were good, spectacle alone isn't enough. I enjoyed seeing Michael Douglas de-aged, but found his character annoyingly irrational, especially regarding his daughter. Evangeline Lilly as Hope didn't really spark for me, and she didn't seem to serve much purpose for the story (except to provide a limp love-interest and move the plot along when it needed it). Paul Rudd, whom I don't have a problem with generally, just seemed uninteresting as a character. Supposedly a great thief and electrical engineer, there was little evidence of this except for a few short montage scenes. Comparing the way in they illustrated Tony Stark's skills in Iron Man, I wasn't convinced about Scott Lang as worthy of superhero status. I was also looking for the "humour" that had been promised, but there was precious little of that. At best, I smirked occasionally (the final fight scenes, flagged in the trailer, were kind of funny), but Paul Rudd didn't really tickle my funny bone.

Overall, a disappointing film from Marvel. For me, one of the weaker films in their catalogue.

Post Credit Scene(s) - I got confused about the PCS and thought there was only a mid-credit scene. Turns out there is a scene right at the end of the credits. I didn't stay for it, but have ready about it online. Seems like it might be worth sticking around for.

All standard 2d at a theatre.

Jurassic World 7/10 = a lot better than I thought it was going to be. It was just a filler until Indian Jones started and I did not think I would enjoy it yet I did. The main thing I found was there were not too many dinosaurs and the ones they had were very effective.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom = 8/10 really enjoyed this one. I like watching movies again and this one held up very well.
Inside Out 8/10 = A very good family movie. Lots of emotion in this one. So much my youngest cried which caught me by surprise. The kids gave it a big thumbs up.
Jaws 9/10 = while I am not a fan of scary/horror movies this one was made very well. I even jumped once or twice. The picture quality was very poor in places though.

I like how Hoyts Sylvia Park and Academy theatre are putting on the old movies. Great to see them on the big screen.

Just saw Mr Holmes - quite good and some lovely scenery. A stellar performance by Sir Ian McKellen which is well worth seeing.

Then the new Mission Impossible.

Not sure about that one. As with many of my recent 'reviews', I am going to say that this one was too long by 15-20 minutes. Do they pay by the hour or something now as it seems to be a modern phenomenon?

Certainly had it's moments but dragged a bit and needs re-editing IMV to pick up the pace.

Saw Need For Speed on iTunes the other day.

Not sure what I was expecting...I have played the games and enjoyed them, so I should have enjoyed the movie.

It was awful.

Heard quite a few podcasts with Sir Ian and have been looking forward to this.

keep a eye out for the documentary on the making of Jaws, Fascinating to see what they went through to get the movie made, Almost as good as the movie.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Queen and Country. 8.5/10

Seen last night at the Embassy. Well scripted, funny and original. I enjoyed it, and highly recommend it.
