That looks pretty cool. But if we're talking trailers/anticipation here...

It's the toned-down green-band trailer, so I'd strongly recommend checking out the red-band trailer for the full effect.

I know next to nothing about Deadpool (other than what showed up in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine film). All I knew was that fans called that film a travesty for what they did to Deadpool. Until I saw this trailer, I didn't know what they were on about. Now I do, and I am totally amped for this film. February can't come soon enough.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation - 8/10

Saw this on Friday. It's a good, fun movie, like most of the series. That's pretty much all there is to say about it - the plot is irrelevant, there's nothing deep and meaningful uncovered here. Just a good old fashioned popcorn actioner.

Some things I noted though. Tom Cruise is starting to look really old! I re-watched MI:2 last week- 15 years weighs heavily on Mr Mapother. It doesn't alter the fun level at all, if anything it makes some of the stunts he does all the more impressive. The intro scene was really good as well - it felt for me like it was getting closer to the TV series, and the opening credits reinforced this. I noticed a very brief glimpse of the IMF leather folder that was the hallmark of the original series, where Dan Briggs would select his operatives for that week's mission. There are more nods to the show's roots in the first 30 minutes, with Ethan receiving his mission briefing in a style more evocative of the TV show.

There's also good dollops of humour throughout the film to stop it from taking itself too seriously. Simon Pegg is probably the main reason for this, but Cruise can keep up comedy-wise, and even Jeremy Renner adds a sardonic note every now and then.

All up, a fun film that made for an enjoyable Friday night out.

Jake Gyllenhaal excellent. Reminds me a bit of Network from 1976 with Faye Dunaway and Peter Finch.

Saw a few movies at the film festival in the last few days.

Deathgasm 8.5/10 a Kiwi Heavy metal comedy horror, damn funny, awesome metal soundtrack, humans turned into demons and proper non cgi gore. Well worth a watch.

Ex Machina 8/10 Sci-fi about artificial intelligence and the turing test. Definitely made one think while watching. very enjoyable.

The Brand new Testament 8/10 whimsical French/Belgian film about the daughter of God going to earth to find her own apostles and spite her grumpy father who only spreads sadness and woe. Plenty of laughs and makes you think about life too.

Kill Me Three Times - 4/10

I'm a fan of Simon Pegg, and will generally watch anything he's in. I saw the trailer for this a while back, and it looked like fun. Pegg plays an assassin hired to kill someone, who ends up getting killed by someone else before he gets the chance - hijinks ensue. I was waiting for a theatrical release, but was surprised when it showed up on Netflix US, so we watched it last night.

This is a good example of how the trailer can completely misrepresent the actual film. From the trailer I was expecting this to be a low-budget hollywood production set with an Australian setting, but it's actually an indie Australian production. And while there are some comedic moments in the film, it's a far cry from how the trailer portrayed the film.

The story is actually not too bad, but it lacks the polish and refinement that I would expect. The viewer has to work hard to comprehend the first 40 minutes, as there's no signposts along the way to make clear that it's one story told from multiple viewpoints (at least, at the beginning). Throughout the course of the film, the central character seems to switch several times, and there's a fakeout near the end of the film which is never foreshadowed, which feels like it cheats the viewer. I don't mind a good twist in a film, provided it's cleverly signalled so that it's possible to anticipate (even if I don't actually anticipate it). However, this twist wasn't signalled, and it also made no difference to the outcome of the film, which made it feel even more like a cheap trick to try and spice up the ending. There are other similar problems with the film, which it isn't possible to discuss without revealing spolers.

The cast are mostly Australians, with a few "names" - Bryan Brown, the lesser-known Hemsworth brother (Luke) - and, of course, Simon Pegg. His casting did make me wonder - was it a fluke where the casting director decided to see if they could nab him for an Aussie holiday and get a big-name actor for their small Aussie film? Or did Pegg know the director and decided to do him a favour? Or is Pegg just happy to do the occasional small indie film in amongst his Star Trek/Star Wars/Mission Impossible roll-call?

Overall, not as good as I thought it would be, and disappointing because it could have been a lot better.

Headhunters, on Netflix. Came across this on one of those '50 best movies streaming now' lists and was not disappointed.

It's a Norwegian movie about a guy who is a recruitment head hunter by day and art thief by night. He gets mixed up with the wrong crowd and ends up in a cat and mouse game with a formidable foe. Part action, part thriller....fast paced with a good twist, a highly enjoyable film, 8/10.

Headhunters is based on book by Jo Nesbo well known Scandinavian author.
Books great, good to hear movie was too.

The Intouchables. A really good French film with interesting characters. As it is based on a true story it had a lot of feeling to it. My wife normally does not comment after watching a film so for her to say it was good as soon as the credits started to roll shows the impact it had. 8 or 9 / 10 I think I will go for a 9.

A recent 99c rental from iTunes gave me Escape Plan.

With Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Vinnie Jones in it I wasn't expecting much, but I got WAY more than my money's worth.

Would i watch it again? Maybe not. But it was a good wee yarn with high action and fun along the way.

Clearly these guys enjoy doing what they do.

I too really enjoyed Headhunters atched it quite some time ago but would certainly recommend it for anyone who likes the occasional foreign language film.

Been surfing Netflix and keep accidentally watching "True stories" or movies based on actual events...

The Impossible

Based on a family that went on a holiday to Thailand and ended up fighting for survival when the Tsunamai hit their resort. 8/10

The Good Lie

Reese Witherspoon plays a supporting role in this film about Sudanese Refugees that get a new life in USA. It covers their early life, losing friends and family in the war in Sudan but doesn't get too involved in the violence or politics... some comedic moments as they learn to live in the american world. The main actors are actual Sudanese refugees and do a really good job of the movie.

BackCountry

Another movie based on the story of a couple who go on a weekend retreat to a national park and encounter a bear... The style of filming wasn't my thing, think "Blair Witch Project" and some scenes were a little too explicit. My biggest complaint is that this whole move could have been avoided with a few intelligent decisions and some very basic survival equipment. Always take a map if one is offered. And don't be the idiot that takes things from his girlfriends bag without telling her.

Watched The Man From UNCLE the other day. 6/10. It was OK, entertaining, funky retro styles, nice action scenes. The leads had the look, but I didn't feel the chemistry the roles really needed. And Guy Ritchie needs a slap for the split screen action scenes.
Luckily I went on cheap ticket night, so I don't feel ripped off.
